Cornell Names Samuel E. Stumpf as Eleventh Cornell President

Samuel E. Stumpf of Vanderbilt University has been elected Cornell’s 11th president. He will assume office July 1, succeeding Arland Christ-Janer, with election announced May 27 after a special Board meeting. Stumpf, born 1918 in Cleveland, holds a PhD from the University of Chicago and has led Vanderbilt philosophy since 1952. He emphasizes liberal arts, student development, and open dialogue, saying the college exists for its students and urging nonarbitrary rules and scheduled student conversations.

Wicke to Speak at Cornelius Baccalaureate Service

Myron F. Wicke, General Secretary of the Division of Higher Education, The Methodist Church in Nashville Tenn, will be the baccalaureate speaker at Cornelius Baccalaureate Service at 10 30 a m Sunday June 11 He will also receive an honorary degree from Cornell at the afternoon commencement exercises Wicke has held various positions in the division since 1949 and earned degrees from Western Reserve University with further graduate study at Oberlin and Columbia Colleges and has honorary degrees from several American colleges Continued on page 8.

Dorms to Close for Commencement Week 1967

Dormitories close 8 p.m. Sunday June 11 with desks closed at 4 p.m. The last meal is noon on June 11. The Commons opens 8 a.m. and closes 5 p.m. on Commencement Day. Graduating seniors are excused from board job work from June 8 through Commencement. substitutes may fill in. Other students keep regular hours through Commencement. failure to meet duties risks future campus employment.

Senior Recognition Day Awards And Budget Actions

The Cornellian reports the Senior Recognition Convocation outcomes with several student awards and department honors. Public Affairs Club received $400 and the RLC Coffee House project $300 from a $700 surplus, while other recognitions include Brooks Memorial Award to Robert Rubin and the American Institute of Chemists medal to Richard Foemmel. Departments announce poetry and fiction prizes and Who's Who honorees with Phi Beta Kappa selections and Senior Fellows in the Humanities noted. President and committees discuss calendar changes and ID cards.

Heald to Speak at Cornell 114th Commencement

Henry T. Heald, former Ford Foundation president and founder of Heald Hobson and Associates, will deliver Cornell's 114th commencement address on June 11 at 8 p.m. Heald will receive an honorary doctorate. His career spans NYU presidency and long aviation and engineering leadership. Heald earned a 1923 degree from Washington State College and a 1925 master's in civil engineering from Illinois.
