The May festival ends with a spectacular Saturday climax marking a successful week of events. Attendance and community spirit peaked as evening activities wrapped up the celebration.
The May Festival attracted a large audience at the Auditorium for a program led by Stock featuring Dvorak Symphony No. 9 From the New World. The performance highlighted thoughtful balance of modern and classical works with strong responses to the Adagio-Allegro Molto and Rondo Infinito. Soloist Mme Van Der Veer and pianist Steinway-equipped Rachmaninow piece received notable attention.
The Aletheans stage Shakespeare's The Tempest in Stageland Hollow this Saturday. The outdoor setting showcases Ariel and Caliban in a romantic, fanciful tale with natural amphitheatre effects. No admission is charged and preparations have run steadily toward a successful public performance.
The pianist Shattuck demonstrated superior technique and poetic interpretation in the Rachmaninov concerto, with elastic touch and refined rhythm. Mme Van Der Vere impressed as a strong newcomer contralto, delivering a rich flexible voice in the Conti aria.
The annual home track meet will be held Saturday with Mount Vernon merchants supplying gold silver and bronze medals for first second and third in each event. Ribbons will honor fourth place and winning relays. Special cups go to top individual point winner and to the mile relay winning team.
The Cornell Pep Club outlines its year end finances noting a hundred dollar treasury and paid bills. Knight is elected president with Hill graduating, Lillian Guild secretary, Owen Lovett treasurer. Future plans include new activities, policy, and fundraising to benefit students, alumni, and faculty.
The meet promises to be the fastest class event in years with keen interest and close competition. Organizers urge all to attend and support their class.
Cornell baseball overwhelmed Coe College 11 to 2 at home with Edwards pitching well but receiving ragged support. The seventh inning spree included a two base hit and a three bagger after a walk and passed ball. Coe managed only one hit as Abbott struggled on the mound and the defense faltered.
A Geneva event titled Lake Geneva Jollification will be held Thursday night at 6 10 in Faculty Alley. The bonfire gathering is for girls who have been to Geneva those going those who would like to go and those who simply enjoy toasted marshmallows. It supports the endowment campaign.
