The May Music Festival drew large crowds for the opening concerts. Mischa Elman’s two hour performance held listeners in thrall as he earned four encores including Dvorak Humoresque. Walter H. Golde accompanied on piano. De Gogorza, Winslow, Garrison, and Werrenrath also impressed audiences.
De Witt Williams, finishing his second year at Cornell, travels with the Chautauqua troupe to the southwest and plays in an orchestra. Katheryn Paden also performs in Chautauqua work as a member of a musical organization. Both youths are noted as promising musicians.
At the Lower Palisades, new sleeping quarters rise east of Rock View tavern, replacing older, less substantial facilities. R. C. Turner plans several years tenancy this spring and has overhauled the grounds. Visitors report improved condition and better visitor suitability than ever.
S. W. Finger offers a handsome reward for the return of Mrs. Fingers watch taken from the gym. The item is an open faced ladies watch with a jewelled fleur de lis back and Hess & Cuthbertson St. Louis on the dial. No questions asked. Information gratefully received.
Dr Joseph Fort Newton of Cedar Rapids conducts the last vesper of the year in Mt Vernon. He is an internationally known preacher and author whose Life and Letters of Lincoln increased his prominence. He will later preach at City Temple London but will not accept a permanent invitation.
Coe and Cornell prepare for a tight field meet on Monday with balanced chances. Coe leads in jumps and hurdles while Cornell shows speed in sprints and discipline events with multiple key contenders across the lineup. The outcome hinges on relays and distance events as both teams seek decisive points and possible clean sweeps.
Dillion Bronson 84 a renowned Cornell alum gave a brief address at chapel Friday praising Cornell and its role in his success. He urged better equipment for the university, urged tolerance locally and globally, and suggested war would yield tolerance as a byproduct. He announced another talk tomorrow at 2 PM to dedicate a monument for soldiers buried in unknown graves, weather permitting at the cemetery or M E church.
Kinsey of Highland Park wins game from Cornell with five walks and two scores driven in by Callahan. Byerly muffs and Kinsey’s quick plays keep Cornell scoreless until late. Grigsby swipes bases and steals third, but Cornell’s attempts stall as Byerly and defense hold. Walker’s one hand grab saves a larger tally in the ninth.
