Keokuk Student Wins High School Theme Contest

Grace Swanson of Keokuk High School won first prize ten dollars for a short story titled She Didn t Care in the Cornell English Club High School Theme Contest. Second prize went to Margaret Shawland of Atlantic High School for a sketch From Aunt Pheebe Ann s Treasure Chest.

Hoadley Elected To Fill Student Council Vacancy

In a special election held Thursday Dewey Hoadley defeated Ted Triechman with 116 votes the highest count in these elections. Hoadley takes office immediately to fill the vacancy as clerks Harry Genung and Emerson Burkhart oversaw the election and Frances Collins and Thelma Lull served as judges.

Courses Announced for Cornell Summer School

Plans for the Cornell Summer School proceed with a Yale professor hired for Romance studies. The two five and a half week terms begin June 16 and July 24, offering twelve semester hours total. Subjects include Chemistry Economics Education French English Mathematics Physics Sociology Spanish Art Oratory Music. High school courses run eight weeks in seven with six days per week and two courses earning one semester unit each.

Aonians Win Out In Final Debate With Aletheans

The Aonians defeated the Aletheans 2 to 1 in the final intersociety debate of the women’s series held last Wednesday night at Thalian Hall. Eva Maxwell opened for the affirmative, followed by Stella Plaehn and Maurine Baldwin, while Ruth Pirie Bessie Bowers and Ruth Barnett spoke for the negative. The Romans won floor work but relied on canned arguments. the debate covered the League of Nations as a vehicle for permanent world peace and the history of postwar attempts to prevent war.
