Manly Torrenace and Briggs expected to place today as Cornell track team aims for strong team showings in this event.
The Ames, Drake, and Grinnell squads vie for top honors as ten state schools compete in what promises to be the most hotly contested track meet. Cornell and Coe are noted contenders, while Manly and Benton pace Cornell in prelims.
At the annual election of the Cor nellian staff Don C. Kreger was reelected editor and Clifford Boylan kept the position of managing editor. Kenneth Mathews was named business manager elect of the Royal Purple and may resign to take the Cornelian manager post. The paper has seen rising circulation and advertising returns and will launch a subscription campaign to offset stock value declines. A price reduction is possible if reader response improves, though recent market trends delay any announcement.
Delegates from Cornell and fifteen colleges attend the first convention of women’s literary societies in Iowa City under the Women’s Forensic league. Mary Kinnavey presides. sessions run through Saturday with plans for a permanent state organization and a banquet to close the event.
Prizes remain unclaimed as Cornellian reports the Pep club letter contest winners must claim their funds. First prize went to the letter signed Dan old man Ken Davis. second to Dear Frances signed James Hollem. If unclaimed within sixty days the money may be redirected to a worthy project.
Malcolm Dowell, a prominent Cornell student musician, injured Friday afternoon at Upper Blow-Out cliff near Palisades. While descending a wire-laced rock face with Claude Cottingham, his finger on the right hand’s middle joint gave way, dropping him several feet to the river edge.
Dr. Thomas Nicholson, former Cornell professor, named a Bishop by the General Conference at Saratoga Springs New York. Nicholson later led Dakota Wesleyan University at Mitchell South Dakota after serving as Cornell president, and previously as Secretary of the Board of Education. The conference noted the first ballot for Bishops with W C Stuckslager receiving a vote, prompting jokes about his self vote.
Juniors entertain seniors at a theatre night promising the return of tent shows in the region. Albert Andreae announced the Autger Bros. Broadway dramatization Rip Van Winkle, with Vernon's approval, while hosts supplied peanuts and candy and local youths Risser Lahman Craig Arbuckle Eva Maxwell Bill Brandon Arva Brady helped.
Amphics on a weekend excursion defy weather, chaperoned by J M Bachelor and C J Smith. Twenty men traveled by interurban with eggs and pickles as supplies while various escapades and mishaps entertain the camp as midnight refreshments close the trip.
Des Moines Iowa May 19 Grinnell pitchers dominated as Cornell went scoreless. Macy triggered a late eighth inning rally with a three base hit off Walker and Little followed with a single to drive in the winning run. Doc Walker fanned 13 over eight innings while Schultz held Cornell to three scattered hits. Umpire Southerland stood out as Grinnell’s defense held. The Grinnell team eyes Highland Park next with Byerly starting for Cornell and Kinsey for the Highlanders.
W. B. Jones after two years teaching science at East Greenwich Academy Rhode Island has accepted a position with Viscol company of Boston a chemical preparations maker. He will begin in June with bright prospects in the new enterprise.
Mr J M Bachelor of the English department will deliver the commence ment address at Calamus on Thursday in June. The Gladstone Clionian societies hold their annual picnic at the Palisades today.
