High School Music Contest Winners Awarded Cornell Scholarships
Iowa and Illinois contestants shone at the Cornell conservatory auditions with 11 high school musians earning scholarships. First prizes of 120 dollars went to Cedar Rapids pianist Jean Betty Beauchamp and Freeport mezzo-soprano Betty Laughlin, with several second and third prizes across piano, vocal, and instrumental divisions. Judges from the Cornell faculty praised the event and thanked Cornell students who helped entertain guests.

Rock Hounds Travel to McGregor on geology trip
A Mount Vernon group led by Dr. Don B. Gould departed at 5:30 am for a geology field trip to McGregor Iowa. The expedition included Henry Campo Marty Kestenbaum Carl Beckman and Harlan Soper who relaxed at a cafe during a mid trip break and later returned at 4 30 pm after a long but enjoyable day.

Premiere Of Miller Sonata At Jolas Recital
The premiere performance of a new sonata by Prof. Horace Alden Miller, retiring next month, will be featured by Prof. Jacques Jolas in the last of four piano concerts at the chapel Sunday at 4 p.m. The program spans Poulenc Milhaud works, Miller's Fi at Minor Sonata, Hindemith dances, Debussy pieces, a Ravel Toccata, and Stravinsky Szanto numbers, with Miller noting the piece’s experimental harmony and glassy bell like dissonances.

Millers Host 40 Symphony Members for Farewell
Approximately 40 members of the Cornell Symphony orchestra attended a Sunday farewell party for Director Horace Alden Miller at the home of Professor and Mrs. Miller. A pair of field glasses was presented to the retiring conductor who will move to California next month. Copies of the Orchestrian edited by Beth Baker were distributed and refreshments served.
