Five Elected to Represent Men in Senate

In the morning election Arthur Kindred Wallace McCullen Orville Welzel Binford Arney and Stanley Todd were chosen to represent their classes in the Men's Senate next year. A prior Wednesday election was voided due to only forty four voters. Ninety two votes were cast this morning.

Men’s Senate Honors Three For Key Awards

Ralph Johnson Wallace McCulen and Gerald Garard earned sufficient points for the Men’s Senate Honor Keys. Johnson led the Pep Club, lettered in football and basketball, and did outside work. McCullen played varsity football and basketball, joined the Glee Club and Oratorio Society, and did outside work. Garard served as class officer and contributed as Cornellian reporter debater and Glee Club and Oratorio Society member. Earlier keys went to Lloyd Appleton John Mogenson Arthur Kindred Kirby Cook Orville Welzel Gale Allen.

Cornell Band To Play On Main Street Wednesday

The Cornell College Band will give a concert Wednesday evening May 23 at 8 o clock in the business district on First Street.

Spanish Students Dine At K Inn

About thirty-five students in the Spanish department enjoyed a dinner at the K-Inn last Wednesday. Miss Bessie Howland and Mrs. L. R. Herrick were guests. Ralph Johnson led a toast program with class reps presenting short toasts on Columbus, Don Quixotte, Spanish art, and Spanish poetry. Victrola music from Miss Howland’s record collection closed the event.

Trackmen Meet Knox Tomorrow at Ash Park

Cornell track team faces Knox at Ash Park with Thorpe in the half mile and Corlett in the mile. Captain Raymond Smith and Cook in sprint events, Kouba nursing a torn ligament, and Knox lauded as probable conference champions with Schraub and Mann as standout performers.

Local Graduates Hear Chandler Sociologist at Commencement

Dr. S. L. Chandler of the sociology department delivered the commencement address to the local high school graduating class last evening. The talk titled Sociological Progress in Western Europe addressed the seniors in the high school auditorium. This year’s class is the first to graduate in the new high school building.

Cornell Seniors Favor Phi Beta Kappa and Notables

The Dartmouth notes Cornell seniors favored Phi Beta Kappa by 55 percent and Hoover over Lowden. They name Lindbergh as the era’s most admired man while Maude Royden and Jane Addams top women. Political science is seen as most valuable. foreign languages and vocational survey least.

Cornell placement office finds jobs for thirty students

Thirty Cornell seniors and undergraduates have secured teaching positions through the teachers' placement bureau with assistance from instructors. Some jobs were obtained without direct bureau help, but credentials were distributed through the agency. Fees allow recommendations to be kept on file for possible future use, and cooperation with major professors is expected to boost placement efficiency.

Sandburg Reads and Sings at Cornell Talk

Poet Carl Sandburg spoke Tuesday night at Cornell, asserting that the will to be a poet endures despite obstacles. He read new verses including Early Hours Bitter Summer Thoughts Sky Pieces and Rat Riddles before closing with reflections on art in all professions.

College Bookstore Sale Hours And Purchase limits

The college bookstore will be open for student book purchases on Thursday May 31 and Friday June 1. Hours are 8 to 10 in the morning and 1 to 5 in the afternoon. Only books in good condition are accepted and only a limited amount will be bought due to stock. Signed Bookstore Management.

Cornell Adds Secretarial Course Next Year

Cornell announces a new branch of business training in the economics department offering stenography and secretarial work with beginner and advanced courses in shorthand typewriting and office training. No college credit. Sixteen new courses total with resumed offerings from prior years. Full descriptions appear in the Cornellian on May 22.

The annual faculty senior dinner was held last night at The Grill with about eighty attendees. Informal talks were given by Professor Kelly and class president Charles Graham though no definite toast program was planned.

Twenty One Apply for Seminar Membership

The student body will elect ten of twenty one applicants to join a seminar next year on college social systems under Professor Mc Connell. A President's advisory council of fourteen students and five faculty members will select twenty applicants, then the student body chooses ten from that group.

Marian Hill Betts Dies After Long Illness

Mrs Marian Hill Betts mother of Alice R Betts dean of women died after a four months illness at the home of Miss Nama Lathe. She was born 1856 in Newcastle Pa and was 73. She leaves two sisters in Seattle and Salt Lake City and a son Wm C Betts Jr who died in 1916. Funeral services are at the M E church with interment at Muscatine.

Old Timer Remembers Ground Breaking for Old Sem

An elderly Cedar Rapids student recalls 1869 customs and May Day frolics at Cedar River, music on a decorated wagon from Iowa City, livery stables busy with carriage teams, and a county fair featuring horse racing as baseball had yet to emerge.
