Cornell Awards Scholarships for English Students and Staff

The college announced English scholarship and book awards honoring outstanding work. Henry Wesley Ward joins Cornell as assistant professor in history and political science, replacing a vacant position. Plan Spring Stomp At Last School Dance

Seniors Plan Library Wing Addition as Class Gift

At a Tuesday class meeting Cornell seniors approved adding a room in the library’s new wing as a class gift. Each senior contributes 25 dollars, paid as five yearly installments after graduation. Alumni officers were chosen: Don Wilson president, Jeannette Kubal vice president, Corinne Johnson secretary, and Jean Dewey treasurer.

Caltech Names Lee DuBridge President

Dr. Lee DuBridge a Cornell graduate elected president of the California Institute of Technology at Pasadena succeeding Dr. Robert Millikan. He has chaired the Rochester University physics department and led MIT's radiation laboratory for six years.

Debaters Climax Purdue Meet Marks Yearly Activities

The Purdue meet held May 8 11 featured six rounds on U S foreign policy with delegates from eighteen schools including New Jersey Montana Colorado Alabama and Michigan. Cornell sent Beverly Breckenridge Bob Conner Herb Kane and Jim Gillette with Bob achieving a superior rating and others at least one excellent. Next year opens with an October discussion meet and invites from Wheaton Knox Iowa Wesleyan Iowa State Teachers UI and Coe.

Cornell College Band Outdoor Concert On Pfeiffer Hall Lawn

The Cornell College Band performs Thursday evening May 23 at seven on the Pfeiffer hall lawn between Pfeiffer and the Practice House. Ethel Ryan directs the Orchisis dance group with Peggy Lapham as Debussy Syrinx soloist.

May Music Festival at Cornell Draws Record Crowds

The forty eighth May Music Festival at Cornell Conservatory closed with sell out concerts and record audiences. Ellabelle Davis opened with a wide range of works earning praise for voice and interpretation, including Schumann and Verdi. Muriel Kerr followed with Bach and Beethoven, showing mature artistry and technical command as the festival continued.

Crafts Class in Armstrong Hall Inspires Student Creations

A visit to the crafts room in Armstrong Hall showcases near finished projects by Miss Nama Lathe and Mrs. Doug Anderson students. Mothers Day gifts are already sent home by several students including Claire Distelhorst Janet Nash Marilyn Christensen and Jeannette Kubal. Jeannette works on a wooden marionnette while Henri designs a life sized doll for classroom use.
