Campus Sing slated for Sunday evening at Arm strong hill. AWS and Mens' senate present. Contestants from campus groups and dormitories vie for 15 10 and 5 dollar prizes with judges from faculty. Groups should submit two songs with encore optional.
Red Cross field representative David Brockway teaches a three hour water safety and life saving course in the college gym. Thirty students attend with a mix of Cornellians, Upper Iowa and Coe, including senior Red Cross life-savers. Each evening begins with a lecture, then discussion, a written test, and pool practice until 10 pm.
Schedule fragment lists events from Friday to Friday including Red Cross Water Safety Course sessions, an orchestra concert, All-Campus Sing, and various chapel activities. Also notes a Midwest conference Tennis Meet on the following Friday with times and locations partially given.
Major General Lewis B. Hershey announced an additional college qualification test to be held May 22 at 1,000 testing centers for students who were prevented from taking it earlier. Applications may be obtained from the nearest local draft board and mailed soon to Educational Testing Service Princeton New Jersey.
A large May gathering discussed the Discipline Committee at the final academic year conference. Dr Herb Hendriks outlined counseling steps and committee membership while Dean Meade explained student testimony rights and faculty roles.
Student Council appoints Dick Potter and June Yamada co chairs of Freshman Week for 1952 53 Potter a Marshalltown junior has three years chair experience. Yamada a Chicago junior is Mortar Board elected and Tri Beta member. Next year Campus Chest is led by Jack Stanton and Aleen Lettsome Staunton a Mt Vernon junior is Ram track weight man and college drummer. Lettsome Staunton from TI and active on Social Committee. Dick Caple named head of Religion In Life Emphasis program. Maxwell junior wrestles and sings in choir. New orientation and RELI life ideas suggested but awaiting Council action.
The schedule shifts afternoon exams to Saturday. Finals run May 31 through June 6 with tests starting Saturday morning. If exams include objective questions, at least one essay question is required. Each class tests at its scheduled hour with instructor discretion on format and length.
After a May 8 car crash near Marshalltown Bob Staffanou and John Dickinson remain hospitalized at Deaconess hospital in Marshalltown. Dickinson may be discharged soon and Staffanou’s prognosis improves with transfusions totaling two quarts. Staffanou’s return to school remains doubtful.
Dr Otis E Young heads the teacher placement bureau announcing more Cornellians placed in teaching positions. The Cornell University Orchestra under Kenneth Pace presents a Sunday program in King Memorial Chapel at 4 pm. Norman McLean sings arias from Mozart The Marriage of Figaro, with Bill Montgomery on flute and other works including Schubert Unfinished Symphony No. 8 and Frescobaldi Toccata. All townspeople faculty and students invited. no admission fee.
Dean J B MacGregor of the registrar's office requests all students to pre-register by noon Saturday May 17. Students not returning next fall should report to the Registrar's office and fill out a card to indicate their plans.
Carolyn Burns soprano and Stewart Waller tenor will give a joint Junior voice recital Tuesday May 22 at 7 30 p m in the Chapel. They study with Miss Ruth Pinkerton and invite the public to attend.
Three Cornellians attended the annual Iowa Methodist College association meeting in Des Moines. President Russell D Cole vice-president Dr Earle A Baker and Miron A Morrill director of publicity spoke. Earl A Roadman Morning Side college was elected head for 1952 53 and Bishop Charles W Brashares proposed a plan to raise 100 scholarships to aid Methodist tuition across all four colleges.
At a Mens Senate meeting a Big Brother style plan was approved to assign freshmen to a senior adviser. Bob Morrison, Senate president, said the goal is to ease initial college life challenges by pairing freshmen with seniors, ideally in the same department, though not required. The arrangement has no fixed tenure, and the freshman will mainly seek guidance early in the campus experience.
Beloit College, previously on probation for overemphasis on athletics, was readmitted to the Midwest Student Government Conference at the spring Carleton College meeting in Northfield Minnesota by a 5 to 2 vote. St Olaf joins next year and seminars on leadership, honor systems, orientation, off campus activities and college newspaper finances were held.
