Webb, acting theatre director, oversaw unpacking as veteran crew noted the opulent outfits and velvet silks. Mellencamp and Webb first connected during his graduate work at the University of Michigan where she designed university shows.

Lightning Strikes Mt Vernon Methodist Church Steeple
A Sunday afternoon lightning bolt struck the Mt Vernon Methodist church steeple, knocking slate shingles loose and starting a fire. Ralph Immer and George Brown smelled smoke, Ralph Immer alerted Chief Walter Kohl, and Ed Gill activated the fire whistle. Braces in the steeple were shattered and the full damage remained unknown. Ward Horton reported seeing a ball of fire.

Stock Fund Drive Reaches 40000 for May Festival Endowment
The Frederick Stock Memorial fund drive reached 40000 before the 1948 May Music festival. Co-chair Mrs. Russell D Cole said the three year effort began last fall in memory of Dr Frederick A Stock who brought the Chicago Symphony to Cornell from 1903 to 1943. The goal is 112000 for 112 concerts, with completion planned for May 1950. Funds go to the May Festival Endowment to finance future hilltop events.
