Nancy Price reviews the Cornell College May Music Festival dedicating the forty sixth season to wartime sacrifices. Miss Tourel delivers a polished Friday night concert from Cleveland, spanning German Russian French English Spanish and American works.
Orchesis announces its annual spring recital Saturday evening May 13 at the Little Theatre. Featured pieces include A Study in Focus Aspiration Fountain of Time and Espiritoso with solos by Robin Probert Louise Lievense and Ruth Sheffield. Assistants are Tom Tashiro and Don Kassilke. Phyllis Wylie a Benton Harbor Michigan sophomore was elected social chairman by the advisory council on Wednesday. She has served as junior counselor and on several committees and plans sociology major with music minor. Her future programs include all school parties after-dinner programs Red Cross work free movies and inter dorm activities.
Admiral William D. Leahy, Chief of Staff to President Roosevelt and former governor of Puerto Rico, will deliver the commencement address at Cornell on Monday June 5. The decorated naval officer, born in Iowa, graduated from the Naval Academy in 1897 and rose to rear and vice admiral before his ambassadorial posting in France.
Professor Walter R. Agard head of Wisconsin classics visits Cornell for a two day Classical Conference. He speaks on Building a Better America in chapel, Humanities in Post War Education to the faculty, and shows an illustrated lecture on Classical Mythology in Modern Sculpture at 800 p m in Armstrong hall Little Theatre.
Cornell sponsors a two day Latin Conference May 12 and 13 titled The Place of the Classics in Post War Education under Professor Mark E Hutchinson. Walter Agard opens with a Friday night address and a Saturday morning talk on Aeneid as Contemporary History. Students present Iphigenia in Aulis in the Little Theatre following Agard’s address with scholars Clyde Murley Norman Johnson C C Mierow among participants.
In response to news of the Allied invasion, a special meeting will be held in King Memorial Chapel. The bell will ring thirty minutes and again five minutes before the assembly, inviting all students faculty and the community to participate in meditation and prayer.
President Cole sent a letter to Rear Admiral L E Denfeld after a student faculty advisory council meeting. The note says Cornell welcomes further navy program continuance but seeks negotiations over use of college facilities in chapel. Students were given 48 hours to respond. A Cole Bin meeting echoed administration position.
Three women music students will present a joint voice recital Sunday afternoon in the chapel at four o'clock. The soloists are Barbara Hansen, Wanda Brause, and Joyce Thurber, with respective accompanists Arlene Swain, Grace Anderson, and Dorothea Medal. All study under Miss Ruth Pinkerton. Marian Stone will give her junior organ recital Tuesday evening, May 16 at 7 30 in King Memorial Chapel under teacher Eugene Devereaux.
Pre-registration for the 1944 45 first semester runs May 15 to 20. All students except graduating seniors must file a registration card or declare nonreturn in writing. Freshmen meet advisers May 15 17. sophomores and juniors May 17 20.
