Man In The Street Chooses 1937 Royal Purple Queens

Royal Purple staff and Cedar Rapids Gazette help select 1937 Royal Purple beauty queens by surveying nearly one hundred residents in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. Two afternoons were needed to break a tight vote for third place while colored enlargements of the contestants were shown in Moniteur studio windows. Results withheld until the Royal Purple release in about two weeks.

Artists Do Work For Stock Gift Honoring Dr Stock

Cornell art students and professors prepared a limited gift book presented to Dr Frederick Stock by President H J Burgstahler after his hundredth appearance with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The volume features a pen sketch of Stock, a colored orchestra scene on the chapel stage, tulip and lilac drawings, an appreciation by Prof Albert F Johnson, and a Lane poem, all lettered in red and gold and bound in blue leather with Stock's name in gold.

John Klimo To Join Chicago Symphony

John Klimo of Mount Vernon will join the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for the 1988 May Festival concerts after signing for next season. He is the oldest son of Mount Vernon station master and bandman John Klimo. Klimo previously played with the St Louis Symphony and trained under Horace Alden Miller.

Margaret Lilley to Give Violin Recital at Cornell

Margaret Lilley student of Prof Karl Andriat will be presented by the Cornell conservatory in a violin recital on May 18 at 7 pm in the chapel. The program includes a Tortini sonata two movements of a Lalo concerto a Rimaky Korsakoff number and several other pieces.

Pre-registration for the 1937 38 academic year starts. Freshmen should see Deans Betts or King to plan schedules. Music majors contact Prof Oakland or Prof Baltz before registering. Jolas To Give N B C Performance Weekly

Prof Jacques Jolas will present a summer concert series on W E A F New York and NBC beginning in July with ten weekly programs through September. The broadcasts will cover music from Bach to contemporary works and mirror his Cornell program. Juilliard guest pianist final recital on May 23 features a premier of a Sonata by Horace Alden Miller.

Psychology Meet Discusses Leeper Teaching Methods

Dr. Robert Leeper spoke at the Midwestern Psychological Association on teaching beginning psychology. A 45 minute discussion followed and a symposium was organized with Leeper as chairman to continue the talk. About 40 people attended and a lively two hour discussion followed. Interest was shown in Cornell's new introductory course.

Motion Pictures At Chemistry Club Thursday

The Chemistry Club will show the film The Story of Storage Batteries in the chemistry lecture room at 7 p.m. Thursday. Ralph Kunz will give a talk on storage batteries before the film.

Oakland Revives Music Auditions

Sixteen scholarships totaling 1440 await winners of music auditions here under Prof. Lloyd Oak land. Eligible are high school seniors and graduates without college credit. Divisions include piano violin pipe organ cello composition woodwind and brass. Each division offers 120 and 60 dollar scholarships. Cornell Groups Perform Friday evening contestants host dinner then student recital. The little symphony directed by Prof. Jacques Jolas college choir by Prof. Harold Baltz brass quartet by Prof. Oakland and soloists on program. Contestants stay in dormitories Friday night with breakfast and lunch Saturday. Professor Harold W. Baltz head of the conservatory reported the May Music festival reached thirty ninth observance with record crowds. The festival featured varied programs drawing attendees from distant places and reinforcing the Cornell tradition.

Carloads from Cornell filled the Cedar Rapids Shrine auditorium last night for the road production of Tobacco Road. The lively audience enjoyed the stage adaptation of the familiar story.

Pulitzer List 1937 Names Baker and Other Recipients

Richard T. Baker 34 wins a $1500 traveling fellowship in journalism as part of the 1937 Pulitzer awards. The list includes Margaret Mitchell George Kaufmann and Robert Frost among others. Baker, a Phi Beta Kappa former Northwestern student, will study in Europe after earning his master's at Columbia.

Dr Samuel Mc Laughlin announces plan to place fifteen students in teaching posts for next year. Eighteen secured positions. eleven more offered contracts awaiting better salaries. Movie Of Christ Life To Be Shown At Church

A film titled Life of Christ based on the Oberammergau plays will screen Thursday at 7:30 PM at First Methodist Church. It covers Christ’s life from nativity to ascension, filmed in Europe, the Holy Land and Egypt, backed by a religious films bureau, with no admission but a silver offering requested.

Hopkins Wins First In Extemp Contest At Tau Kappa Alpha

The extempore speaking contest hosted by Tau Kappa Alpha drew seven speakers. Gene Hopkins won first prize of five dollars, Merton McKendry took three dollars, and Clark McNeal earned one dollar. Judges were Franklin Létter Joe Fink and C. F. Littell. The event's success suggests it will return next year.
