The Purple Masquers present He Who Gets Slapped at the chapel tonight at 8. The cast identity has been kept secret since rehearsals began creating curiosity among Cornell playgoers. A circus atmosphere with clowns a band and showmanship will center the big tent feel.
A Chicago soloist will headline during next week’s May Music Festival replacing Margaret Lester who canceled after an accident. The performance adds a notable artist to the lineup and maintains the festival’s schedule.
Thursday chapel election named Orville Welzel Wilbur Messman Gale Allen Vernon Messman and Tom McCrary to the Men’s Senate for next year. McCrary won the national AA wrestling title at 118 pounds and holds multiple campus roles. Retiring leaders include Arthur Kindred and Wallace McCullen with Kindred having served as president.
Pal Day featured a sunlit clash as faculty and college boys played a forbearing baseball game while students inspected birds nests painted cliffs and paddling canoes. The day ended with exams looming for the hopeful Sherlocks who tracked Pal Day every day.
Cornell track team hosts Carleton in its first home dual meet of the season at 2:30 pm. Coach Dean’s squad aims to rebound after Monmouth showing with three marquee races featuring Thorpe versus Sprague, and Corlett against Severson, promising a fast afternoon.
In a Tuesday evening International Law class exercise in the Lower Chapel five students acted as expert judges and issued a 3 to 2 decision in favor of the United States. Kirby Cook Miguel Reynolds argued the U S case that the Lusitania was torpedoed without warning violating international law. Francis Ellis Leland Pritchard defended Germany noting the submarine as a new warfare tool not bound by old rules and that the ship carried munitions but whether beyond its quota was disputed. The panel discussed timing and potential alternate causes of the second explosion and German motives amid US anger over the tragedy.
Professors C F Littell and L Chandler are set for Cedar Rapids events this weekend. Littell with Jacob Swisher will discuss Researches in Progress in Iowa Colleges, while Chandler joins a discussion group with Grinnell Simpson and Coe professors. Multiple state meetings of scholars and educators are planned, with W S Ebersole attending a Methodist Board of Education executive meeting in Chicago.
Laura Mitch ell Klinefelter teaches summer speech courses at Cornell including Play Production and Speech Fundamentals. She coaches dramatics at a Town high school and will provide private lessons and student play coaching during Drake University judged summer session. Prof McConnell notes these courses aid English teachers seeking theatre and declamatory contest experience.
Pre registration for freshmen set for Monday Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. All freshmen must report during those days with women to Dean Betts and men to Professor Littell.
Five social seminar reports were read to Cornell students during extended chapel periods. Summaries, tables, and full reports are in the library for study. Data from a questionnaire of 427 students showed 14 percent did not participate in activities, 48 percent dine at dorms, 22 percent at restaurants, 12 percent at boarding clubs.
At least three Cornell alumni are teaching science in Chicago. Herbert R. Smith, 708, teaches chemistry at Lake View High School and authored a general chemistry textbook. Olin Cantwell, class of 1920, teaches biology at Crane Junior College. John R. Coulson, class of 1922, teaches chemistry at Calumet High School on the South Side.
Director Frederick A. Stock leads the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in the thirty first annual May Music Festival on May 16 17 and 18 rarely using the written score and relying on memory. The ensemble, founded 1891 by Theodore Thomas, is the third oldest US symphony and mainly performs in Chicago with occasional out of town engagements. The hall in Chicago hosts the majority of concerts, funded by a large subscriber base of over 8 500 contributors.
