Nobel laureate Arthur H. Compton of the University of Chicago will lecture at Cornell at 8 p m Thursday on observations about cosmic rays. He leads a global survey with about sixty co workers, addressing the rays nature energy and origin.
Claude Rose student of Horace Alden Miller will give a senior organ recital in the chapel auditorium on Tuesday May 16 at 4 15 o clock His program includes Bach Toccata and Fugue in D Minor Rheinberger Sonata in A minor Jenkins Dawn Night Steal Away Miller arrangement At Eventide and Saint Saens Rhapsodie No 2 with the first performance of At Eventide by Rose
Prof and Mrs Roy A Nelson are parents of a 10 pound baby boy born Monday morning at 10 30 oclock at St Luke s hospital Cedar Rapids. This is the Nelsons third child.
Jacques Jolas returns for a third consecutive summer on campus to present a five week recital series. He will conduct a popular summer piano master class and offer private lessons to a limited number of advanced students. He serves as Dean of the Music School at the University of Louisville and runs a Juilliard Foundation project with a weekly WHAS radio program.
Ken Eade class president announces freshmen must remove all dandelions from campus by Friday noon May 12. Sophomores are told to gather on the chapel steps tomorrow at 1 p m to begin the anti dandelion campaign.
Music lovers mark Cornell college festival as the Chicago Symphony led by Dr Frederick A Stock departs for Mount Vernon Saturday for its thirty first trip to the event. Stock will conduct the ninety second concert on Saturday evening May 13 as he has since 1908 when he began as Theodore Thomas’s assistant. He has been counsellor to the Cornell Conservatory of Music since 1930 and in 1927 received an honorary doctor of music degree. He praises Cornell’s growing musical appreciation and the festival hospitality.
Nina Koshetz, renowned Russian soprano, will give a recital Friday May 12 at 8 15 pm in the chapel auditorium as the opening concert of the annual May Music Festival. She is praised as the foremost interpreter of Russian songs with a wide repertoire and celebrated for acting ability.
Sunday observance of Cornell Day featured students and faculty preaching in area churches. Musicians Richard Tims Dana Boggie and Alison Moore performed at various churches. Professors and doctors delivered sermons in Low Moor Vinton Eldora Greene Hopkinton Janesville Martelle Oelwein West Branch Iowa Falls and Davenport with Alison Moore performing Ave Maria.
Joseph Kaselow outlines plans to edit the 1933 34 freshman handbook. The book will be larger and revised with Emily Adele Gibson and Florence Sherbon assisting. publication is set for the end of the school year.
An exhibit of work from Cornell art studio and classes will be shown in the art rooms of the Law building from 9 30 to 11 30 Saturday morning. All interested are invited.
Vernon Nash of Yenching University Peiping China will visit the Cornell campus Friday. He will be the guest of honor at a tea sponsored by the English club and Copy club at 4 o clock at The Gill. Nash is a journalism instructor at Yenching and spoke on journalism in China at Cedar Jams Iowa College Press association. Attendees may come with 10 cents to cover expenses.
Halsey Plummer of Martelle a Cornell music student died yesterday in Davenport after a short illness. The funeral will be held Thursday at 2:30 in Martelle.
A sequence of campus activities lists lectures by Dr. Compton on May 11, May Festival from May 12 to 13, a Claude Rose organ recital on May 16, the science club meeting, The Importance of Being Earnest on May 18, a high school audition contest on May 19, a track meet with Coe on May 20, one act plays on May 22, a junior violin recital on May 23, final examinations beginning May 26, Memorial Day half holiday on May 30, Alumni Day and Baccalaureate on June 3 and 4, and the Eightieth Annual Commencement on June 5.
The Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Dr. Frederick A. Stock returns for the Cornell May Music Festival with two concerts on Saturday May 13. The afternoon set features Brahms first symphony and orchestral excerpts while the evening program spotlights Strauss and Wagner with Wagner marking his fiftieth death anniversary.
Ten students of the Conservatory of Music will be presented in the bi weekly recital on Wednesday afternoon at 4 15 in the chapel auditorium. Piano numbers will be performed by Sarah Reed Frances Peshak Arline Heidklotz Ruth Trump and Claude Rose. Vocal selections will feature Harold Gethman Edmund Ringland Beth Gunzenhauser and Norman Meyer. Ruth Laidig will play an organ solo.
The National Collegiate Players of Cornell announce Margery Jensen and Katherine Frei have been elected to the organization and will be initiated into the local chapter soon.
The sophomore foods class and Mrs. Luella V. Ninde of the home economics department attended the Tuesday afternoon session of the Cooking School program sponsored by the Mount Vernon Hawk Eye Record.
