Cornell poll finds 110 pacifists in 474 voters

A chapel poll of Cornell students shows 110 of 474 voters are pacifists who would not support any war. Only 54 would support war in any circumstance, and 310 oppose unless attacked. Freshmen and sophomores mostly lean pacifist while seniors show mixed views. President Roosevelt's navy program draws little support and a war referendum is favored.

Jean Heavener Wins First In Ad Contest

Jean Heavener won first prize in a campus ad writing and design contest sponsored by Kilian’s of Cedar Rapids. Four Cornell women received awards. Heavener’s Rhythm Step shoe ad appears on page three. Second place earned eight theatre tickets to College Swing. others won six tickets each. Judges were Katterjohn, Sanford, and Rowe.

Festival Soloists Bring World Fame To May Music Program

The Cornell chapel hosts two celebrated soloists next week as the fortieth May Music festival opens. Albert Spalding, top American violinist, and Ernest Hutcheson, Juilliard dean and pianist, are described as vibrant, sports-loving thinkers unaligned with a purely arty stereotype. Their early careers include Bologna honors, Paris debut at sixteen, and resilient self-reliance after a privileged start, with Spalding touring Russia and funding early concerts through his father’s support.

Lange and Lange Lead Cornell May Music Festival

Dr Frederick Stock will direct the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Cornell College for the 102nd and 103rd May Music festival concerts on May 4. Hans Lange returns as Stock's associate and will lead the local chorus and four soloists in Bach’s work as the festival caps three days of events beginning May 12 with Albert Spalding and Ernest Hutcheson performances.

Bach Chorale Transcription Opens CSO May Fest

The Chicago Symphony opens its May Music Festival with a Bach chorale transcription by Cornell conservatory faculty Prof. Eugene Devereaux. His orchestral arrangements have been performed by the New York Philharmonic and Cincinnati Symphony among others.

May festival Mass cast announced with Chicago soloists

Kathryn Witwer and William Miller of Chicago join Ruth Pinkerton and Francis German of the Cornell faculty in the soprano alto and tenor roles for the Bach Mass at the afternoon festival on May 14. Miller has sung the Mass before at Cornell, Witwer makes her Cornell debut, and the quartet will rehearse four times this week and three next week under Prof. Harold W. Baltz.

Moots Reads Paper On Flood Control At National Meeting

Dr E E Moots returned from an eight day Washington trip where he read The Theory of Flood Waves at the American Geophysical Union. The Iowa University party learned from Horton and other engineers, with 1000 delegates at the National Academy of Science building.

Extemp Contest to Begin Next Week at Clark McNeal Host

The second annual extemporaneous speaking contest sponsored by Tau Kappa Alpha starts next week. After Monday’s preliminaries on May 9, prizes will be awarded to three winners from a six contestant field. Topics are drawn from a hat and scores are based on a no-notes format. The Navy Policy under Roosevelt is the general question. First prize is five dollars, second three, third one.

Elections to the Men's Senate are now completed with the two presidents of the men's dormitories presiding on the governing body. Merton McKendry of Merner and Emil Anderson of Altoona are the new additions. The senate now includes Frank Lyn Nelick, Miles Knight, Charles Hokonson, and the two presidents named above.

Daughters of Atreus Cast at Cornell Announced

Cornell announces the cast for Robert Turney's Daughters of Atreus with Barbara Brice as Clytemnestra, Robert Hartung as Orestes, Betty Lou Evans as Iphigenia, Chester Webb as Aegisthus, Hugh Muncy as Agamemnon, Ruth Weber as Electra, and further roles filled by Sheldon Rahn Lois Reitzel Eleanor Hughes and others. The production, directed by Albert Franklin Johnson, emphasizes demanding acting and Greek-deity stamina across the speech department.

Cornellians Hear Auditions. Winners Pending

Cornell music faculty judged Saturday auditions for the Cornellians with Prof. Lloyd Oakland directing. Forty students competed, including siblings Ruth Erdice of Keota, Bernice Gough of Marion, Helen Post of Glen Ellyn, Richard Paul of Anamosa, and Marjorie Baker of Cedar Falls. Winners will be announced next week.

W A A Hike Culminates In Star Gazing and a Little Sleep

A Cornell camp craft class hiked three miles through meadows and woods last Saturday. By midnight 22 Cornell girls slept under stars, while others joined in poetry and campfire singing. Star gazing and a two hour bird hike followed with Miss Maxine Williams and Miss Dorothy Rogers guiding. Honey and baking powder biscuits baked in a reflector oven were on the menu.
