Bishop Ivan Lee Holt of St. Louis will be the commencement speaker at Cornell College on June 9. President John B. Magee will deliver the baccalaureate address on Sunday, June 8. Holt has served twenty years as pastor of St. John's Church in St. Louis.
Bishop Holt, a leading Methodist educator, was elected to episcopacy in 1938 and later became a bishop in the united church. He has chaired the federal council of churches of Christ of America and served on key church boards. At Cornell Mt. Vernon campus, the May Hulk issue will be released next Monday featuring Marjorie Holmes Mighell and Winifred Van Etten among other contributors. The Iowa Academy of Science meeting at Simpson College saw Dr Roy Nelson of Cornell elected president for the coming year and Keyes delivering the major address as faculty attended.
The Cornell Conservatory presents Francis German baritone with Miss Helen Venn as accompanist at 8 pm Sunday May 4. The program features all American songs from Hopkinson to Ballad for Americans and includes settings of Whitman and Teasdale with a Cornell chorus of Lois Rupp Mary Yost Eudora Lindman Virginia Bolton Gordon Myers Clark Hull Delbert Richardson Wilbur Wilcox.
Cornell Conservatory faculty join the 55 piece Cornell Symphony Orchestra under Lloyd Oakland for a May 7 concert at King Memorial chapel. Jacques to piano soloist, Eugene Devereaux orchestrator, Jolas performs Mozart in EB flat. Holst Somerset Rhapsody receives its first Cornell performance. Other works include Magic Flute Overture and Franck Symphony in D minor.
Freshman through senior classes are invited to Neptune Nights a swing Dixieland event in a sea ballroom. Ray Harstick leads the music while Neptune and his court of mermaids swordfish and other creatures preside from walls and programs. Don Frank Bill Dodge and Art Anderson sell admission tickets for the May undersea dance.
The Armstrong alumni exhibit features 47 works by Cornellians. Clifford Benton ex 17 shows 11 pieces including posters for the National Safety Council. Russell Cowles ex 08 displays five oils. one titled Farmer and the Raincloud. Grace Kegley 29 and Betty Schmidt 37 contribute watercolors and oils.
The Cornell May Music Festival returns with four major performances. Alexander Kipnis of the Metropolitan Opera opens May 15 with a recital. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra headlines Saturday night under Dr Frederick Stock, with Kathryn Witwer and Bruce Foote as soloists in the Brahms Requiem performed by the Cornell Oratorio Society.
Rab bin Morton Berman author editor and minister will speak at 8 p.m. in King Memorial Chapel Mount Vernon on the topic Israel Among the Nations. He will visit classes and attend a Writer's club session at 4 p.m. and will be available for conferences all day Monday after arriving in Mount Vernon. He studied at Yale and the Jewish Institute of Religion and has taught in Chicago and other cities.
Results from Saturday's auditions award first and second prizes to multiple performers across Organ Violin Brass Woodwind Piano and Voice categories. Winners include Phyllis Stevenson Lincoln Theodore Schwartz Ottumwa and Barbara Lieberknecht Letts with multiple ties noted.
