The Chicago Symphony Orchestra will close the May Music Festival with three concerts on campus. Dr. Frederick Stock has led the ensemble for 25 years and is famed as both conductor and composer.
Dr Ernest F Tittle pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal Church Evanston Illinois will deliver the commencement address at the Cornell graduation exercises in Cornell auditorium on Monday morning June 9. He is a prominent minister and an excellent speaker who delivered the baccalaureate sermon to the Cornell class in 1922 and was well received.
Miss Faye Gardner a Mount Vernon Lisbon Rotary club entrant will portray Roumania in the pageant at the Eleventh District Rotary International Convention in Marshalltown. Gardner a sophomore and college orchestra member will appear at the May event.
The campus plans a week of horseshoe practice as groups condition for the barnyard pastime. Softball games continue Monday May 5 after postponements earlier this week. Next Friday the freshman and sophomore baseball team meets the junior and senior players.
Dr. C. C. Hall of Maynard Iowa lectured on sex related problems and the many forces behind disease. He cited sixty infectious diseases eleven body systems and twenty five organs that can be affected along with thousands of chemicals and hundreds of thousands of plants and insects that spread disease. He warned that without protection birds insect populations could overwhelm mankind and noted accidents as a major death cause. He explained adrenal glands hormones coagulation and adrenaline as part of the body's defense against injury and shock.
W. O. Jackson and Gerald Hill represented the Mt. Vernon Lions club at the Ninth District Lions International convention held in Marshalltown on Thursday and Friday.
A survey of Bowman Hall at Cornell College shows seventy of ninety girls read in spare time with a preference for novels over non fiction. Realism dominates with works by Willa Cather Rolvaag and Thomas Hardy among favorites and Thornton Wilder drawing strong praise from nine readers.
The Wo mans Glee club presented a home concert on Thursday evening with a vivid stage scene and disciplined singing. Despite temperamental weather and lights the group carried through the program due to thorough training.
Cornell faculty members and ministers from Mount Vernon will speak in multiple Upper Iowa conference churches on Cornell day Sunday May 4. Educational Sunday will highlight Cornell College with literature distributed after services.
President and Mrs Burgstahler hosted a Wednesday evening reception for senior men and women at their hilltop home. The receiving line included Dr. and Mrs. Slaght Dr. and Mrs Whersole Miss Alice Betts and Dr Burgstahler. Beth Wallis sang three selections and Margaret Miller performed two pieces. Betty Cole sang two songs and Winton Dunlap gave an impromptu speech at the close.
Dr Harry F Lewis former Cornell chemistry instructor until 1928 will join Lawrence College next fall. He will conduct research and assist in training advanced chemistry students at Wisconsin priced institution with a $6000 salary.
Dr. C. C. Hall of Maynard Iowa and class of 15 described an arena scene of Roman days in chapel on Wednesday. He linked bloodthirsty sports to American history with the audience witnessing prize fights and noted films cater to that worship of force. The talk ended with a discussion on passion versus physical love.
Freshman tracksters practice nightly to prepare for a May 10 triangular at Cedar Falls. Helmer shows vaults over eleven feet and may be a standout with more practice. Brookins Mathews Azer and others compete in dashes and middle distances while field events see Hickman Blair Helmer excelling in high jump and broad jump.
President Burgstahler will address the Coe College student body at chapel hour Monday morning. His planned talk last week was postponed due to illness.
Monmouth and Cornell meet at Ash Park tomorrow at 2 30 p m in a dual track meet. Monmouth Coach Hart trains a speedy relay unit King Sanderson Windbigler and Stuart while Cornell counters with Hayes Kouba Hunter and Millard Macaulay in sprint and middle distance events. Swaney Thorpe Long Davis Juadd and O Connor from Monmouth also contest the two mile race.
The junior class leads the campus program and Bob Swaney will discuss Is the Church Essential to a Christian Life. After addresses and conferences, students will pose questions guiding an illuminating discussion with special music planned.
On campus fresh men treated junior women to a dime movie and May baskets. The evening featured a popcorn stand boom and upperclass scrutiny as juniors were escorted to Kinn for snacks. The next day the freshmen delivered candy baskets, with no reports of duels or conflicts.
