Frosh Narrowly Escapes Death In Cornell Pool

Cornell freshman Bert Harris nearly drowned in the college pool Wednesday. He was revived by Ray Johnson, Dave Pellett, coach George Vander Weyden, and hospital staff who used artificial respiration and heart stimulants. Harris is recovering at Mercy hospital and doing well.

Mortar Board Sells Cornell Campus Map For Centennial

The Pat Reeve drawn 18 by 24 inch line map of Cornell campus with Mt Vernon area will be sold by Torch, the Cornell Mortar Board, next week in women’s dormitories and Main Hall. Maps cost 50 cents plus 10 cents mailing. Per president Joan Lyford the map is a centennial redo of a prior drawing.

Kollman and Students to Attend History Conference

Dr. Eric Kollman and Cornell College students plan to attend the annual conference for teachers and students of history in Iowa City today and tomorrow. Several nationally known historians will present papers. The highlight is Friday’s lecture by Dr. Holborn of Yale on History and Humanism Since the Reformation.

Summer School Terms Set At Cornell For Two Sessions

Cornell resumes two summer terms from June 11 to July 16 and July 16 to August 20 under Dean Jay B. Mac Gregor. Richard Willis of Clinton High School leads the dramatic arts department for five weeks. Camp Norton in Wyoming hosts geology field trips. tuition and board remain unchanged. Week of campus events with religious and social gatherings

A sequence of scheduled campus activities from Friday March 2 through Friday April 4 includes hat hunt, hat dance, Lutheran services, social rooms events, chapel programs with an oratorio, and all school communion services. Notable names include Rabbi Harold I Seizman.

Wamac Schools Parley Set For April 4

Eight Iowa communities will send students to a high school careers conference on the Cornell campus, featuring 25 vocational field specialists. The event mirrors a Cornellians conference held March 11 and 12 with discussion groups in South Main Armstrong halls and the Law building. Participating schools include Anamosa Marion Vinton Independence Manchester Monticello and Maquoketa.

Starr To Undergo Minor Surgery At Mayo Clinic

Dr Charles D Starr head of Cornell's chemistry department will undergo minor surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota. He will be away after spring vacation with classes in physical chemistry taken over by John Conant a University of Iowa graduate student. Al Moyer, Cornell senior, will run the quantitative analysis class. Mrs R B Tuberty a registered nurse accompanied the Cornell college choir on the New York trip as group nurse.

Dohmeyer Heads 753 Royal Purple Staff at Cornell Centennial

Audrey Dohmeyer, Crete NL sophomore, elected editor of the 1953 Royal Purple by the Board of Publications. Cornell Beauty To Enter Contest

The Cornell Student Council accepted Max Factor offer to enter a Cornell student in a national college beauty contest. Entries are photographs judged on beauty. The winner receives a $1,000 scholarship, a one week Hollywood trip for her and a chaperon, twelve valuable gifts, and Cornell receives a $1,000 school fund.

Shackfords To Attend Iowa State Convention

Dr and Mrs John Shackford elected to represent Linn County Democrats at the state convention. Delegates in Cedar Rapids gave 84 votes for the first preferential ballot with 50 for Truman, 18 for Stevenson, and 16 for Kefauver, for the Des Moines May 28 gathering.

MacGregor Sees Cornell Campus Needs Improve Spirit

Dean Jay B. MacGregor, soon to leave Cornell for Omaha University, gave a “dean s eye” review to Tuppy s journalism class. He cites weak community spirit, insufficient intellectual atmosphere, and poor campus manners as core problems and urges reforms to prepare students for life beyond college.

Wires Of Praise Sent To Cornell Choir In New York

The Cornell choir arrived at Town hall in New York on Wednesday afternoon March 26 and received congratulatory telegrams from figures including Iowa Governor Beardsley congressman Talle and senator Hickenlooper. New York Governor Thomas Dewey also sent a wire along with messages from Mt Vernon officials and Cornell alumni leaders.

Woodwind Quintet Clinic and Concert at Renwick and Boone

The Cornell college woodwind quintet will perform and hold a clinic at Renwick high school on April 2. They will join the Boone high school orchestra in a rehearsal after returning from Renwick, with members Montgomery Anderson Perry Firman Park and guest soprano Elizabeth Tripp. The move accompanies a donation of Dr Charles Keyes’ library to Cornell's German department.
