Ted Weems Orchestra to Play Inter-School Dance

Coe and Cornell social committees announce the final signing of the Ted Weems orchestra for the inter-school dance on April 28. The contract covers 13 musicians and 2 entertainers with a possible Elmo Tanner appearance. Dancing runs 9 pm to 1 am with free Cedar Rapids bus service and mixer dances to promote inter-school ties.

Ballard to Address Groups at Hull House Linked Meeting

Russell W Ballard director of Hull House will speak at a joint sociology club and CSF meeting at 6 45 p m Sunday March 26 in the social rooms His talk titled You and Social Problems notes his Chicago University training and 15 years in East Chicago public schools including 11 years as principal of a 1200 pupil school with 27 nationalities His work on social issues followed a two year leave to organize the Lake County Depart continuing on page four.

Ray and Beckhelm to Perform Joint Recital at King Memorial

Violinist Ruth Ray of Cornell and pianist Paul Beckhelm of Cornell Conservatory will present a joint recital at King Memorial chapel on Wednesday March 29 at 8 00 pm Ray joined Cornell faculty in 1944 and studied with Leo pold Auer in New York and abroad She has soloed with the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago Baltimore and Minneapolis symphonies Beckhelm a Cornell Conservatory director studied with Carl Beecher at Northwestern and with Motte Lacroix and Isador Philipp in Paris He undertakes the program featuring Bach Beethoven and Grieg sonatas with a mix of fast and lyrical movements.

Everyman to be staged by Cornell departments April 1 and 2

Cornell theater presents Everyman in collaboration with the art and music departments directed by Chester Webb. Costuming under the art department aims for unity and period accuracy while Mrs June McConlogue leads the musical score. The production nears completion with stage work and technicals finished. a Cedar Rapids audience is expected for performances on April 1 at 8 15 pm and April 2 at 3 00 pm.

Cornellians Place in State Speech Tourney at Drake

Two Cornellians earned high ratings at the Iowa Forensic Association state tournament held March 17 and 18 at Drake University Des Moines Victor Furnish took second place with a superior rating in men oratory Marilyn Johns earned second place with an Excellent rating in women oratory and also placed Excellent in women’s poetry reading Goldie Armstrong received an Excellent in discussion Bob Morrison represented Cornell in interpretive reading and Furnish joined the discussion tournament

Jane Graham Named Cornell Representative for Drake Relays Queen

Jane Graham, Cornell student and former Homecoming Queen, selected to represent Cornell in the 1950 Drake Relays Queen contest. A Royal Purple staff committee screened campus candidates to meet Drake’s queen qualifications of intelligence beauty personality and poise. The winner attends Drake events April 28 and 29 escorted by Drake men and appears on Des Moines radio.

Faculty To Vote On Suggested Change

A joint committee from the Student Council and faculty Personnel committee drafted a modification to rules on student automobile use at Cornell. The faculty will vote on the proposal to determine if it becomes the rule, with clauses barring freshmen and granting permits to married students or those living with parents in Mt. Vernon, plus insurance requirements and possible exceptions for aid recipients. The council urged a Spring vacation vote.

Zieman To Present Senior Recital at King Memorial Chapel

Gretchen Zieman contralto and Ruth Pinkerton pupil will perform a senior recital in King Memorial chapel on Sunday March 26 at 4 00 pm The Postville native sang in operettas small vocal ensembles and contests in high school and began voice study at Cornell in 1946 studying two years with Francis German before continuing with Miss Pinkerton now in her second year.

Conference Debates Social Group Charter Revisions

The community conference discussed public initiation activities of social groups and whether the 1929 charter suits 1950 Cornell. Debates covered Greek letter names, enforcement on Chi Thetas, no formal rushing, and meaning of public initiation. The session will continue at the next meeting.
