Ernest W Steffen will lecture on Bird Portraiture at Armstrong Hall next Tuesday March 28 at 7 30 pm. He lives in Cedar Rapids and paints birds in their habitats and has exhibited drawings printed in nature clubs and galleries.
In a letter from New Caledonia Ensign Howard W. Ortmeyer reports readiness to sail to Guadalcanal as transportation becomes available. He notes a near beach, pleasant water, occasional rain, and cooler evenings. He describes outdoor cinema on a hillside, tent living, Army cots, flies and mosquitoes, limited off time, and a night of classical music versus local radio distortion.
Opening night at Cornell Little Theatre reveals the unseen heroes behind the show. The stage crew prop and lighting teams scramble to assemble sets and lights while the costume crew scavenges wardrobes for authentic color and fit.
The eighth annual Minstrel Show by the Mount Vernon Lions Club drew full houses and laughter from opening at 8 15. The program featured endmen jokes and vaudeville style numbers by Lions quartet and soloists with the crowd applauding for encores. Proceeds fund a youth center a summer playground and related activities.
In spring the Main Hall redecoration spreads across the south first floor including President Cole and Dean MacGregor offices. Partitions re-arranged in admissions create a compact space and mauve walls brighten the area. Cole's office features light green paint and new built in shelves as MacGregor notes changes.
The Cole House opens Saturday night at 7 with a student run hangout. Esther Sumner and others lead a committee under Dean Holmes and faculty. Margaret Smyth oversees student help. Soft drinks and foods will be served from 8:00 AM to closing hours, with limited Sunday hours. Hodge loaned the piano and dishes are donated, creating a homey atmosphere.
May festival week end set for May 5 and 6 with events led by President Russell Cole. Friday features mezzo-soprano Jennie Tourel in recital following strong New York reviews and Town Hall acclaim. Saturday presents two full Chicago Symphony concerts conducted by Hans Lange.
Final results show a clear majority selecting Cole Bin as the hangout name with Coal Bin Kole Bin as close contenders. The vote reinforces community preference, with Cole Bin topping other derivations by a wide margin.
