Debates set for next week by university teams

University of Chicago debaters will meet on campus Tuesday night March 19 to discuss the isolation question with Cornell’s Dick Grumman and Howard Jeske on the affirmative and Charles Higbie and Max Miller on the negative. A second match Friday March 22 features Western State Teachers College Kalamazoo Michigan teams opposing Cornell on the same topic. Earlier this week Jane Courson and Marjorie Littell argued the affirmative against Central College Pella Iowa with Francis Allen and Robert Nelson on the negative. Coe College sent teams last Monday night with Robert Clemens and William Dean on the negative and Francis Allen and Robert Nelson on the affirmative.

New Issue Of Bios Released With Plant Embryology Cover

The quarterly bioscience magazine Bios released its 64 page new issue this week. George Young designed the cover featuring plant embryology as motif. Published for 11 years, it has a 1200 circulation and reaches many colleges and universities nationwide plus some foreign outlets. Mount Vernon hosts the publication under Professor Frank Brooks as managing editor. The editorial board includes eight biologists from Colorado Texas Wisconsin Ohio and Illinois.

This Week On and Off the Hill Events Preview

A series of campus events listed include a March 15 Democratic rally at the Grill at 8 pm, a March 16 theater showing of A Dolls House at 2 30 pm, and student banquets and dances. Other items include a March 17 violin recital at 4 pm in the chapel and March 9 and March 22 debates with University of Chicago and Western Michigan. An on air radio program and a professor’s lecture are also noted.

Four Cornell Soloists to Perform in Ottumwa Messiah Event

Charlotte Reinke Eudora Linde man Bob Gruenewald and Gordon Myers will be guest soloists in Ottumwa Evangelical Lutheran church for Handel s Messiah passion. The March 17 concert marks the first time Cornell music students are invited as soloists in such a program.

Four Day Chemistry Tour Planned For Students

Chemistry students will take a four day trip during spring vacation starting April 1 visiting industrial chemistry plants. The route includes Ulnon and Wisconsin with stops at the Forest Products Laboratory in Madison and the Institute of Paper Chemistry in Applicton. Plants in Milwaukee and Chicago are also on the tour.

Democrats Hold Big Rally at Grill Tonight

Special Democratic press release notes a Young Democrats rally at the Grill at 8 p.m. Stephen J. Early delivers the opening greeting, with Joseph Mekota leading a Linn county delegation and Paul Claasson as guest speaker. Admission is free. Republicans pay 10 cents.

Seniors Banquet and Junior Senior Prom Planned

The senior class will be entertained by juniors at Pfeiffer hall tomorrow at 6 p.m. followed by the Junior Senior prom from 7 to 12. Dean Betts and others will attend. The Shamrock Shag will highlight a St Patrick theme with Boyd Reter and his orchestra. Tickets 50 cents, 60 cents after two.

New Mural On Geology Wall

Betty Smith a geology major planned and painted a mural in the geology department. It shows a volcanic region with an erupting volcano and an internal view of its structure. Another mural on the landing depicts a swampy Pennsylvanian forest illustrating Iowa’s landscape 225 million years ago and coal formation.

Republicans Need No Publicity Now

Max Miller chairman of the Young Republicans Policy Committee says the club does not need campus publicity now. He adds there will be more news later and that they are watching and waiting.

Second Issue of Sparks from the Rock Pile

The geology department releases the second issue of Sparks from the Rock Pile edited by Herb Hendriks and illustrated by Betty Smith. The mimeographed bulletin informs Cornell geology graduates about department activities with contributions from current members and alumni. It circulates to alumni and exchanges with North Dakota Drury Syracuse and Chicago.

Guest Speakers At Holy Week Services

The Presbyterian church schedules Holy Week events starting Wednesday at 7 38 pm with Rev Lloyd Gustafson on Companions of the High Road. Thursday at 7 30 pm features candle-light communion and Rev Joseph Gray, plus Dr Russell Cole on Good Friday at 2 pm with This Side of Paradise. The church opens 12 to 2 pm Friday for quiet meditation or minister consultations.

Elections announced at women’s and men’s banquets

The Associated Women Students and Men’s Senate announced elections during banquets on Wednesday night March 13. New officers include Julie Bailey as president of AWS and Arlene Panzer and Lois Mitchell as hall presidents. What A Life at Cornell Little Theatre

Cornell's Little Theatre presents the Broadway comedy What A Life by Clifford Goldsmith about Henry Aldrich. Ezra Stone originated the role on radio and stars in this amateur stage version, with a special matinee for high school students at Grex on April 13 and three performances on April 26 and 27.

Mrs Magee Admitted For Treatment At Local Hospital

Mrs. J B Magee was admitted to S J Lukes hospital last Tuesday for treatment and observation. Her condition and medical plan were to be monitored by the hospital staff as she receives care.
