New Members Pledged to Eight Old Literary Societies

The eight old literary societies announce new members after the rush season. A long list includes the Girls Societies members led by F Hogle and E Sortor and the Boys Societies members such as Scott and Rogers.

Mr and Mrs Frank Shaw and John Conrad of Cornell College music faculty delighted an audience at Liberal Christian church yesterday with the March vesper musicale. Conrad’s pleasing voice drew applause as the program closed.

Cornell C club annual banquet features coaches and songs

About 30 athletes and 30 coeds attend the Cornell C club banquet at the Montrose in Rapids after a four course dinner. President Flint, coachs Tracy Thompson Finger and Hank Frei are highlighted. The group returns home after a lively song program led by Herr Winkler with classics like Spring and Varsity.

Rall Grigsby chosen as next year’s basketball captain. An energetic versatile player, he also excelled in football, baseball, debate, glee club, and Adelphian orchestra. Clark Bowen, outgoing captain, praised for leadership and versatility.

Music recital praised for violin and harmony at Cedar Rapids

Mrs Shaw impressed with violin numbers while Mrs Harmon shone in Harmony. Mr Shaw accompanied adding to the program as the quartet choir delivered their usual high order. Dr Newton spoke briefly on A Meaning in Music. Miss Voris and Miss Ormsby also received appreciation. Cedar Rapids Gazette.

Cornelllians Enjoy Party at FI Dodge

The Cornellians attending the Northwestern Iowa Teachers association session in Fort Dodge held a Friday evening luncheon at the First M E Church. A social hour followed and a Cornellians of Northwestern Iowa organization was formed with Geo H Kellogg of Clarion elected president and Van Sant Jenkins of Britt secretary.

Dean McLeod Lectures on Gymnasium Work in Vinton

Miss Mary L. McLeod of Cornell college spoke to a large Cedar Valley audience at the M. E. church on gymnasium work. She was joined by Esther Williams of Vinton to demonstrate forms of organized play. The event boosted excitement for the new gymnasium. Miss McLeod also visited Miss Beulah Perrin during her stay.

Gardner Called to Toledo for Father’s Illness

Innes Gardner rushed to Toledo Ohio last Thursday after a telegram warned of his father’s dangerous condition. The first bulletin said he was improving but a later message gave a bleaker report before Mr Gardner died Monday morning. Cornell mourns with Innes.

Home Oratorical Contest May Open To All Cornell Students

The Home Oratorical Contest will be held on May nineteenth with the first prize winner to represent Cornell in the state contest. Initially open only to literary society members who win internal preliminaries, rules may be revised to allow non members to enter. Orations capped at two thousand words with two hundred words allowed as quotes. The winner earns the faculty trophy for their society plus a medal. Interested students should contact Joe Lodge for details and start preparing promptly.

New England Cornellians met in Boston to revive alumni activity. The Cornell Club of Boston organized with officers including President William Gilbert and Otis Moore. The gathering aimed to unite alumni, promote Cornell visibility, and plan a May meeting continuation.

Investigations to Probe Prisons Camps and Refugee Relief Plans

Dr E T Devine and his son Tom plan relief work linked to prison camps and Russian refugees with the American Embassy in Petrograd. A staged staff deployment would begin after Russian approval and State Department safety assurances, aiming to reach Petrograd by mid April 15. Dr Devine serves as special Assistant to the American Embassy with duties potentially expanding beyond prison camps.
