A chorus of about 90 Cornell students and 40 Oratorio Society voices will perform The Seven Last Words by Du Bois in Cornell chapel on Palm Sunday March 20 under Harold W. Baltz. The Easter oratorio portrays Christ’s Passion Week and the season’s events and has been seen at Cornell before.
Cornell women Nina Pritchard and Alice Brookins debated Carroll College affirmative on canceling intergovernmental World War debts including reparations in the Social Rooms. Lucille Anthony and Lissette Ehrmann will debate Dubuque women on Thursday March 3 at 4 p m with Cornell on the negative. Cornell men Manley Goodrick and William Reynolds take the negative in the 6:40 pm Geology lecture room debate.
The Iowa section of the American Chemical Society held its monthly meeting in Iowa City on Thursday evening with attendees including Dr. Nicholas Knight Dr. J B Culbertson Paul Bieber and Paul Sweitzer. Dr O H Plant of the State University of Iowa College of Medicine spoke on Studies of excretion of morphine in dogs and its implications for tolerance to morphine.
Cornell students filled the Alumni gym for Bennie Harvel and His Torrid Zoners with 80 cent admission per couple. The social committee reports a deficit of $10 from sponsoring the event, planning a Victrola party to cover shortfalls and restore committee sleep.
Altoona students sent Robert Smith a large bouquet while he is admitted at St. Luke's hospital for the second time this year. He had just left home briefly before his illness returned and reports he will not finish this semester but plans to return next fall.
Padraic Colum, born in Longford, Ireland, is noted as a versatile Irish author and lecturer. The Cornell visiting speaker is praised for prose, Irish life stories, folklore, drama, and children's fairy tales, likened to Oliver Goldsmith and Synge by critics.
Mrs. H. J. Burgstahler entertained 19 members of the senior class at a 5 30 Sunday supper. This marks the first of her regular Sunday evening suppers for the seniors and more are planned soon.
Clifford Nelson of the economics department returned to campus yesterday to resume work after being called home to Rockford Illinois ten days ago due to his mother's serious illness. She has pneumonia but is improving now.
Prof Horace Al Miller assisted by F Walter Kuffman Mrs Gerald Hill Margaret Miller Miss Helen Venn and Dorothy Nyweide will present a program of his own compositions in the chapel auditorium Sunday afternoon This is the same program as was broadcast over WSUI Iowa City last Friday evening with additional organ numbers The program will consist of Professor Millers organ compositions
Kellogg Hunt explains a second Royal Purple print is needed due to time limits. The extra print will cover engraving and printing costs, with social groups paying a page price. Deadline for junior and senior portraits is Saturday March 5.
Elizabeth White Parks a journalism teacher has been nominated for junior membership in the American Association of University Professors. The January bulletin lists Luella Starke Ninde and Dr Roy L Fernald as senior and junior members. Dr C R Keyes leads the Cornell chapter and Dr C F Littell serves as secretary.
The calendar lists events including Science Club on March 2, Women’s debate on March 2, Basketball with Coe on March 4, Wrestling with I S T C on March 5, Miller recital March 6, Pfeiffer Golden Wedding March 7, Student debate with St. Thomas March 9, Student recital March 9, Women’s debate with Lawrence March 10, and Purple Masquer play March 11.
Rev Edward T Gough pastor of First Methodist Episcopal church Mt Vernon spoke at chapel this morning. He said Christ's philosophy formed young and that higher values guided his purpose.
Professor Don B Gould of geology will address the Science Club on methods of prospecting for petroleum and natural gas. The talk, illustrated with lantern slides, covers his oil and gas structure studies and helium work.
Joe Mathern has been kept another week at St. Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids for continued care. His brothers Don and Leslie Mathern of Traer visited him on Sunday, the plan remaining for additional observation beyond the planned discharge.
Padraic Colum Irish author moved to present Thursday evening in the chapel auditorium on the topic A Poet in Polynesia. The talk recounts his Hawaiian folklore research under government direction. Colum's Cornell appearance is earlier than planned due to sudden call to Ireland.
Richard Baker reports a Friday evening Thackeray puppet production The Rose and the Ring in the chapel auditorium drew a large mix of students faculty and townspeople The miniature effects created a surprising fullgrown finale and captivated both youth and adults with Fairy Blackstick and the puppet cast.
Dr. C. R. Keyes describes his Iowa archaeology work begun in youth and continued for ten summers with the Iowa Historical Society. He notes a focus on living processes seen in pottery and refuse, not just arrow heads. He has catalogued over 12 000 artifacts from every county and received many private donations.
John St. Barry, business manager of The Cornellian, expects to return to campus later this week. He has been convalescing from a serious operation for three weeks at his home in Manchester.
Coach Dick Barker and Prof. Mark E. Hutchinson represented Cornell as delegates from Town colleges gathered in Marshalltown to create a conference limited to Iowa institutions.
