Road House is being refurbished to accommodate girls moving in. Seven residents from the president's house are already there. Dean Holmes will assign rooms and accept applications. the house will hold about 44 girls. Elsie Barrett coordinates redecorating, furniture is scattered after evacuation, Bessie Wallis returns as head resident, and Roberts takes an indefinite leave.

Sailor son survives sinking of destroyer Perkins near New Guinea
Ensign Fred Travis Jr of Mt. Vernon is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Travis. His ship the U S destroyer Perkins was sunk in a collision off New Guinea on Nov 29. The family learned of the loss after radio reports. Fred later phoned from San Francisco to say he was fine. Buster Travis survived by jumping overboard with only shorts, spending about two hours in the water. The Perkins, commissioned 1936 and 341 feet long with 200 crew, was the second destroyer lost in the New Britain New Guinea area recently. the skipper survived. Ensign Travis has 30 days survivor’s leave and may visit Mt. Vernon after visiting relatives in California.

Ensign Gene Tornquist Survives Liscome Bay Torpedo Sinking
Cornell alumnus Ensign Gene Tornquist Navy torpedo bomber pilot survived the Liscome Bay sinking after an escape through blazing corridors and a rope ladder. He avoided morning patrol duty and clung to a rope ladder as flames consumed the carrier near Makin Island, with 250 survivors among 907 crew.
