Cornell defeats Coe 44 to 27 to even season series on home court. Sage leads with seven baskets while Reitzell and Grissell contribute early and Midway leads. Coe supporters travel by special train to Mt Vernon amid close officiating and strong Cornell team play.
Dr Dudley B Reed medical examiner at the University of Chicago argues in the New York Medical Times that tennis basketball and track athletics are more brutal than football. He says gridiron play is comparatively healthy while other pastimes face harsher health destruction.
Cornell track opens indoor practice under Coach Finger with new material and a hopeful outlook. Gibbs Lusted and Gruwell lead sprint events while Taylor and Steigers anchor 440. Mile relay plans shine, with Lott Tone and Garson among top middle-distance contenders. Indoor training aims to sharpen form until outdoor weather allows.
Friday evening at seven thirty opens the State Student convention in Cornell with an informal social at the M E Church parlors. At eight o clock President Marquis of Coe College will speak on The Relation of the Individual to Christs Program for the World in the Auditorium. Delegates from every college in Iowa, about three hundred, will be hosted by Mount Vernon residents and Cornell students.
Inter collegiate debaters form two balanced teams for triangle debate on the Sherman Act with Beloit and Knox. Reitzell Tallman Bradley E Lott will face Knox at Knox. Marvel Hill Jordan will meet Beloit at Cornell. All three schools boast strong reputations and high preparation.
Nominations for Y W C A officers for next year list Belle Gleason Theresa Nelson as presidents and Marjorie Edwards Olive Gould as vice presidents with Marian Peek Gladys Rigby as treasurer Alma Merwin Emma Watson as secretary Voting is set for four this afternoon President Harlan has throat trouble and is in Iowa City for medical treatment today.
Sunday February 25 events include a 9:00 A M Student Volunteers session led by Philip Swartz and Marjory Melcher. 10:30 A M delegates’ meeting led by Rev Shoemaker. 2:30 P M men and women gatherings with Joseph Robbins, Swartz, Shoemaker, Melcher, Garst and Morris. addresses include The Call of the Boys of India and The Call to Service.
Poor shooting and slumping teamwork marked a closely contested first half as Cornell trailed 9 to 8. Iowa pulled away in the second period with stronger defense, while Cornell guards Carhart and Cramer failed to convert several chances. Reitzell led Cornell with four free throws, but fouls and miscues sealed the Hawkeyes’ 24 to 10 victory.
Five bandits attempted a train hold up near Mount Vernon before Bertram around 2:00 am. The engineer sped away after a signaling error, an assailant fired injuring the engineer in the arm. Authorities search the Bertram woods for suspects.
