He outlines efforts to interpret life for students to develop civic and Christian citizenship, guided by the personality of Christ amid society’s transitions.
Coach Saalwaechter selected Deemer Tennant Pirkey and captain Barbour to run for Cornell in the Illinois Relay at Urbana next Saturday. Muilenberg and Raymond miss relays due to basketball. Barbour Pirkey veteran performers with Deemer sharing experience. Tennant debuts in big meets and shows steady development. Barbour and teammates will also run the college mile relay later in the afternoon.
The girls of the second floor of Altoona will be hostesses at the next YWCA tea. It will be held from three to five on Saturday afternoon in the YWCA room.
Rev. Dillon Bronson, class of 1964, donates five thousand dollars to the Cornell endowment as an annuity. Dr. Lewis, campaign executive officer, announces the gift from a California clergyman known for prior support, including two chapel flags. Funds will boost the endowment not build new buildings.
With championships in A and B divisions cinched by juniors and seniors, runners up will be settled Saturday. Seniors can secure second in A by beating frosh. sophomores can tie for second if seniors lose. In B, freshmen duel undefeated fourth year men for second. yearlings can rise if they beat sophomores. Tie-breaks on Feb 27. finals March 6 with junior A vs Senior B and consolation for seconds.
Rev. Glenn Rowley a former Cornellian and current Methodist minister at Vinton Town will headline the Epworth League meeting Sunday evening. He led the Win My Chum campaign and is described as a capable speaker and seasoned youth worker.
Burdette Johnson, a freshman, was selected student director of the college band at a meeting during practice last night. He replaces Milo Winans who left school at the beginning of the semester. Under Prof Bridgham the Cornell band has been developing through semi weekly rehearsals and plays to every home basketball game.
Cornell prepares for the Colonial Ball tomorrow at 8:00 p m led by Margaret and Charles Barker with Helen Hunt and Kenneth Truckenmiller following. Glee clubs, dancing, a pantomime and other numbers are planned. Guests typically wear George or Martha Washington costumes or formal attire. flowers are not required. the balcony will be closed to the public. refreshments will follow.
Arthur Diekoff's chapel talk sways students to host Barker's mat men with a small admission fee. Barker negotiates a meet at Mount Vernon or Simpson. Captain Truckenmiller and Van Etten end their four year home era as Barker eyes more pre tournament matches.
Under the Women’s Glee Club, a benefit film titled New Brooms will be shown at the Strand theatre Mount Vernon on Monday and Tuesday. The production stars Bessie Love and Leo Hamilton. Tickets cost 35 cents and are sold by glee club members to ensure the benefit goes to the club rather than the box office.
O L Allanson announces tentative Cornell Radio Night lineup featuring conservatory of music faculty and Rose Evelyn Baker with readings. Program includes piano by Eness and Venn, violin by Kisane, contralto Pinkerton, tenor Conrad, and a possible male quartet. History of the Conservatory and greetings from Joe Meade slated.
Verne Jay will present his three act religious drama The Glow Unseen at a joint Y M C A and Y W meeting on March 4 at Cornell. The play has toured Mason City and Cedar Rapids and is a new production for this venue.
In The Cornellian, students debate if cosmetics signal false hearts. Men arrive barefoot to chapel to protest women using cosmetics, but the girls reveal they use beauty practices not for men, attributing motive to male indifference rather than fashion.
The Cornell College Royal Purple basketball team departs for Minnesota for a two game swing with Carleton and Hamline. Captain Dean leads the squad joined by Raymond Muilenberg R. Johnson G. Johnson McCullen Hord Clemmer and Halleen as they face stiff tests in challenging Midwestern rivals.
The Ollapod invites concise original jokes and squibs for three prizes of one year’s Olapod subscription. Editor selects winners based on originality distinctiveness and quality. Submissions due in Mainhall contribution box by March 5. winners named on editorial page and offered staff positions.
Two of the usual meetings were conducted last night by the Y M C A and Y W C A. Miss Lathe of the art department spoke at the Y M C A on the development of the religious element in art and environment. The Y W C A discussed the topic "Friendship."
