Plans for Reconstruction or New Building After Fire

The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees meets Friday to decide immediate plans for Science Hall reconstruction or a new building for Chemistry and Physics. Options include using existing walls with interior changes, converting walls for offices, or tearing down and erecting a larger central building with possible relocation of departments. The Marion Law gift may influence housing Biology and Ecology now or later.

Wallace's Matmen to Meet Carleton

The Cornell wrestling team will meet Carleton here next Friday night in the season's second meet. Carleton is praised for strength in the 115 158 145 and 135 classes and recently beat Northfield Y M C A in all bouts. Wallace seeks lineup certainty as competition heightens in 185 and 125 pounds.

Crown King Queen of Hearts at Freshman Valentine Party

A Freshman Valentine party at the college gym featured red and green decorations. The event included games such as Skip to my Lou Pig in the Parlor and Virginia Reel accompanied by a student orchestra. Margaret Carter and Paul Trump were crowned queen and king of hearts.

SEM Fire Does Not Halt Classes

The administration quickly arranged meeting spaces for classes displaced by the Science Hall fire. By Monday morning all sessions resumed with no loss of instruction. The Physics department moved equipment to the YMCA hall and saved much material, maintaining efficiency across departments.

College thanks students for fire relief at Science building

At a Saturday faculty meeting the Secretary announced unanimous thanks to students and others who assisted during the Science building fire. The administration credits their service with saving much of the scientific material. Secretary F. M. McGaw signed the note dated February 18, 1924.

Dr Knight Builds Large Department at Cornell

A historical note details Dr Nicholas Knight a 25 year chemistry professor at Cornell the College on the hill who expanded a single lab in Old Sem into a larger department. He arrived in 1899 and soon controlled the chemistry work, sharing space with a small recitation room and a physics lab on the third floor while art occupied the fourth floor until 1921 when Professor Lewis arrived.

Origin of Flames Unknown as Old Sem Burns at Cornell

Fire of unknown origin gutted historic Old Sem, Cornell University’s first building, after starting in the freshman chemistry laboratory on the third floor. Volunteers and townspeople fought the blaze amid a strong wind. wood-lined fourth floor and explosive chemicals renewed the fire, which persisted past noon. No cause has been determined.

Dr. Soper Opens Series of Talks at Cornell

Dr. E. D. Soper of Northwestern University lectures at Cornell this week on making religion real and significant. He argues religion is essential as a foundation for morality and social reform, extending to education and political science. He will speak daily in chapel and every evening at 6 45 to emphasize that education alone cannot make life understandable without religious faith.

New Men's Senate Organized at First Meeting

At the first meeting held Monday evening the Men's Senate elected Steve Williams as President Robert Bell as Vice-President and Dan Wolfe as Secretary and Treasurer Regular meetings will be held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month The campus shows strong student support for the new body.
