John Wherry notes Karl Wolfe's water colors and oils as the year’s best exhibit. The southern painter, a portraitist and wood carver, has won many gold medals and studied abroad on a 1929 William M. R. French scholarship. He paints southern scenes, with realistic Negro shanties and varied techniques. Tomorrow four senior debaters Don Jackson Wally Tripp Bob Irvine and Phil Hanna travel to Central College Pella to discuss the Atlantic Charter.
Alexander Kerensky, former Russian premier and key democracy advocate, will be commencement speaker at Cornell College on May 18 per President Magee’s announcement. He held multiple roles in 1917 Provisional Government and later lived abroad, authoring two books on the Russian Revolution.
At the Cornell midwinter convocation last Sunday afternoon President Magee conferred the honorary degree on Dr. Charles Friley, president of Iowa State College. Friley urged scientists to apply knowledge to society and study the effects of advances on welfare. He has led Iowa State since 1936 and holds several scientific and academic affiliations.
The Cornell Little Theatre presents Moliere’s Tartuffe in a Saturday 2:30 p.m. matinee directed by Bill Dodds. Cast includes Jean Raplinger John Huebner Alberta Joslyn Henry Dihlmann Barbara Hansen Doug Anderson and Dodds. This modern concept launches a classics series with Les Precieuse Ridicule slated February 20 led by Muriel Kness.
The campus week lists events from Friday February 13 to Tuesday February 17 including student and piano recitals in the chapel at 7:30 and 4 p.m., a matinee at Little Theatre, a wrestling clinic and meet in the gym, basketball Cornell versus Nebraska and Cornell versus Monmouth, church services, a Young People's Day, a voice recital, and a radio broadcast of Tell Tale Heart on WSUI.
A campus calendar lists dances basketball wrestling recitals plays and other events for February March and April. A feature tale by Edgar Allan Poe adaption of Tell-Tale Heart will be broadcast Tuesday over WSUI. Wally Englehardt, Doug Anderson and Kenny Clausen present the program with director Henry Dihlmann and announcer Howard Orme. Time is 5 15 to 6 45 p m.
Cornell musicians stage multiple recitals this week with two voice students and one pianist, plus 10 participants in a weekly student recital. Tonight at 7 30 p m the chapel hosts the new time for the recital experiment to draw a larger audience. Participants tonight include Margaret Beck Margaret Heitz Richard Head Theodore Schwartz Ellen Francke Betty Chiquet Robert Thomson Joanne Day Raymond Jones and Margaret Anderson.
Lois Mitchell pupil of Professor Jacques Jolas presents a Sunday afternoon recital at 4 p.m. in King Memorial chapel. The program includes works by Scarlatti Bach Franck Chopin with performers Ivis Boyer, Helenrose Nelson, Harriet Schlagenhaus assisting as ushers.
Mary Yost sophomore soprano and Wilbur Wilcox senior baritone present a joint recital on Tuesday February 17 at 7 p.m. in the chapel. They study under Professor Francis German and perform a varied program including Handel Mozart Mendelssohn Franck Debussy and Gounod with arias and songs.
