Cornell orientation pilot shows higher freshman GPA
Four months after the program began freshmen in Tarr and Dows halls posted an average GPA of 3.083 up from the all college average. Seven students in Dr. David Weddle’s group achieved a 3.736 GPA. Faculty advisors advocate more scientific evaluation and random sampling for future iterations.

Fire-damaged Mt Vernon blocks face rebuilding plans
A Saturday blaze caused about half a million dollars in damage to a Mount Vernon business district. Fire crews from seven towns fought the flames that leveled several buildings including City Hall and the American Legion Hall. Debris removal and debris planning will follow a Chamber of Commerce led meeting to discuss development and financing options, with possible rebuilding of a theatre.

OSA Adds Staff Member To Help Life Career Planning
The Office of Student Affairs expands services with a new staff member and a Student Resource Center. John Hysinger, a University of Iowa graduate student, will join Steve Calladay in the Bowman basement on Fridays for in depth discussions on personal and career decisions. A mini course in life and career planning will run on two or three Friday sessions from 1 00 to 3 00 in February and March.
