Dick Siliman was chosen editor for the 1944 Royal Purple after a student election among sophomores. He received 64 of 95 votes, defeating Blanche Gabrielson Betty Jeanne Ensign and Harriett Smith. Siliman, a journalism class member and Cornellian staffer, will apprentice under the current editor.
Cast led by Craig Huston and Jeanette Carlson performs Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew at Arm strong hall to celebrate Cornell Little Theatre’s fourth anniversary. Cast includes Wally Engelhart and Kenny Claussen with costumes authentic to the period. Proceeds partly go to the Red Cross.
The Cornell College Symphony Orchestra begins its bi annual tour April 23 with 50 members and contralto Dorothy Beach. The 37th concert tour features Beach singing Amour viens aider and Let My Song Fill Your Heart while the group performs Brahms Debussy Wagner Prokofieff and other works across Davenport Oak Park Geneva Glen Ellyn Chicago Heights Clinton. Conductor Mr. Oakland leads a varied program including the National Anthem and Peter and the Wolf selections. The a cappella choir tours in alternate years.
Don Frank of CG.P.T on a cross country trip to Washington Iowa Muscatine and back cannot locate the Washington airport after flying along railroad tracks and is forced to land. His instructor from Cornell airport assists him after the landing while Gene Rosburg is grounded in Muscatine by a snow storm delaying departure for two hours.
The Gridiron Banquet is scheduled for February 24 with cartoons and scripts in progress for the annual event. Husk subscribers plus students and faculty will have early ticket access with seats for members and one guest, and tables for eight may be reserved.
The schedule lists Taming of the Shrew showings at Little Theatre on Friday and Saturday, a Cornell vs Ripon basketball game at the gym, an all college convocation at King Memorial chapel, and other talks and concerts through February with venues such as Tull's Armstong and WSUI broadcasts.
Dr Charles FE Friley president of Town State college will speak at the second all college convocation in King Memorial chapel Sunday February 8 at 4 pm on Science and Human Values. Seniors and faculty will form a procession in academic robes with organ preludes and hymns followed by prayers and readings. Mr and Mrs Friley will be guests in Mount Vernon and a dinner will be hosted in Merner hall for the Frileys and science department members.
Timely war related short films will be shown next Tuesday at 7 pm in the Little Theatre. Sponsored by The Cornellian the program lasts 30 to 40 minutes and includes National Defense Review No 1 Aluminum and Women in Defense with a noted score and praise from trade journals. The YMCA Motion Picture Bureau supplies the films.
A humorous diary style piece discusses sugar costs and price shifts at vendors, a local hangout selling out, and details a February calendar entry. It includes a flirtatious survey of potential dates among freshmen and sophomores, with social commentary on dating culture on campus.
A group of students and faculty will meet Sunday at 7 30 at Toppy Tull's home to discuss the first 200 pages of War and Peace. Copies are available through Toppy at a reduced price of 1.20. All interested in the discussion are welcome Sunday night.
Professors Bob Warner and Ed Rozwene will speak on Military Strategy of War for the International Relations Club Tuesday night in Judge TLittell's room after defense films. The format opens with press information, then student Q A as panels cover topics from War Production to The Psychology of What March 10 and other future sessions through May 6.
