Hon J Adam Bede of Minnesota will furnish the second number of the college lecture course speaking in the auditorium next Friday at eight oclock. His topic is Our Nation Its Problems and Progress. Admission for students is covered by tuition payments. Bede was born in Ohio in 1856.
A self made American figure spanned printing teaching journalism farming editing public service and lecturing. He served as United States marshal for Minnesota and from 1903 to 1909 as a Republican congressman also backing Grover Cleveland at times. Known for humor and patriotic oratory his chautauqua talks addressed national life and civic responsibility.
The Home Service association held a Wednesday evening meeting at 6 40 in Thalian hall. The round table session discussed definite church problems raised by student ministers. The group invites all Cornellians interested in home service work to attend biweekly meetings at 6 40.
Mount Vernon high school meets Anamosa high at 7:30 in the Alumni gym tonight. Coach Sanderson helms the local squad and assists the Varsity. An expected large crowd is hoped due to no inter-collegiate games this weekend.
Cornell University plans a spring baseball season with Billy Branch as coach pending final negotiations. The squad features Bieber and Paulson as pitchers, Miller Faragher behind the plate, Sagle Ensign Faragher and Kirwin in the infield, with Kennedy Weisley Sagle and Bieber in the outfield. Eight of twelve games are set including Ames twice, Coe and Knox twice, and a Minnesota trip to face Hamline and Carleton. Freshman material and potential varsity extensions noted.
Professor Chandler urged liberty equality and fraternity as core ideals for young Americans. He said freedom loving men like J Stitt Wilson challenge narrow church views and the youth must fight for industrial intellectual and personal freedom to uphold rights and academic freedom.
Last semester statistics show total enrollment of 705, up 64 from the previous year. Men increased by 72 while women fell by 8, narrowing the gap to 47. The campus plans aid through scholarships and loans to keep students working and learning.
Dr and Mrs Talboy bring the documentary famine film from Caesarea to the chapel auditorium Sunday evening at 7 30 PM. Their wartime relief work adds weight to the screening and a message from the couple accompanies the event. They will also lead the morning service at the Presbyterian church.
Roodhouse girls led Y W weekly program with the theme Broken Swords. Pauline Stoner spoke on Our Talents Edith Strahan on Our Desires and Beatrice Davison on How to Use Our Talents. Jeanette Ferris played a piano solo followed by six girls singing.
Dr Flint announced to the student body his departure from Mt. Vernon for the feast after commencement. He expressed optimism about Cornell entering a period of prosperity beyond previous times and will be away about three weeks from administrative duties.
Mildred Court announces a contest for the funniest page in the Cornell annual with a silver loving cup first prize and a year book second prize. Submissions close February 20 with entries due to Hale Haven Mildred Court or J Raleigh Gatewood. staff will judge merits. Subscriptions and credit options are available through Gatewood as the year book work begins.
The Odds defeated the Evens 17 to 11 in a Wednesday night scrimmage as the Evens rest their regular lineup. Kathryn Kuster led the Odds with the most baskets and the team showed improvement in shooting and passing. The W A A meeting featured Dorothy Hawkins promoting advertising the W A A and activities at the Girls Grex. Boxes of chocolate bars are being distributed in dormitories to raise funds with Doris Champlin coordinating in Bowman hall.
Penn outscored Locals in the final period to win 14 11 after a 7 2 first half deficit. The Penn quintet defended well and staged a late comeback to defeat the Purple in a Thursday gym contest. Local overconfidence and mid term exams were blamed for a mid season slump while Cornell struggled with shooting as Dubuque played a poor showing. Sagle opened scoring with a three pointer.
John T. Frederick editor of The Midland will speak on Literature of the Middle West in Adelphian hall Monday at four. He is hosted by Cornell English club and will stay for dinner with an informal exchange on writing after the talk. Admission twenty five cents.
