Cornell College hosts a campusology themed social event Saturday 8 to 10 30 pm in Main Hall rooms on the third floor. Freshmen through seniors will join four class rooms with leaders, games, stunts, and entertainment to preserve dignity while serving refreshments and ensuring energy for the journey home.
About 30 students met to form a debating union modeled on Oxford and Cambridge unions. The plan allocates half an hour per week to four students presenting pro and con on a topic, with a student chairman and a five member committee of students and faculty to preselect topics. The group aims for fuller, structured discussion and may host an evening dinner with an outside speaker. A mock nominating convention may come this spring.
Dr. Nicholas Knight notes in The Black Forest article that German forests sustain rich lands by planting a tree for every one removed, contrasting with the declining forests of the United States.
Professor Clair F. Littell and about fifteen history and social sciences students attended a conference of Iowa history and social science teachers at the University of Iowa. Prof. C A Van Tine spoke on Truth Propaganda and the American Revolution and Prof. W E Dodd and Miss Bessie Pierce addressed Civic Attitude on Text Books with further talks scheduled for Saturday.
The Royal Purple staff under Ruth Schlaberg present the farce Dover Road on Saturday night at 8 with three acts of humorous escapades about a married couple eloping with others. Tickets 35 cents, 70 cents for the lucky. Leap Year dates rumored. town folks urged to arrive early for seats.
Prof H C Stancliff notes Richard Halliburton will lecture on The Royal Road to Romance in the college Auditorium next Thursday February 9 at eight. Admission is one dollar without course tickets. Halliburton, Princeton graduate at twenty one, has traveled Europe Asia Africa and reached summits including Matterhorn and Mount Olympus.
Cornell frosh routed Kohawks 27 to 13 in a basketball game at the local gym last Wednesday. O Connor opened with a long basket and the lead never left Cornell as Coe trailed throughout the contest. The Cedar Rapids team made late rallies but Cornell’s defense held firm.
Three days remain for men to enter the free throw contest part of the intramural program. The gym is open 5 to 6 this afternoon and 8:30 to 12 tomorrow morning. Last entry time is Monday 12:30 to 2. Contact Howard Woodruff by Saturday evening if you cannot attend. Professor F M McGaw lectured Thursday on The Four Dimensions.
A benefit at the chapel auditorium tonight at eight features the Cornell College Symphony Orchestra Mozart Jupiter Symphony reading Edna Ferber Sun-dried, Ruth Schlaberg. Women’s Glee Club spirituals. Nama Lathe Rhine travel talk. Conrad and Pinkerton songs. Purple Masquers The Window Seat. Tryouts for women debaters tomorrow at 1 PM with a seven minute speech on advertising.
Cornell students plan a petition to Congress opposing the Pit Navy program and urge a Sunday discussion group to consider the plan. The National Council for Prevention of War explains the proposal, its costs, and the dangers of an arms race, urging action before mid February.
Cornell basketball coach Judd Dean takes a four day trip to Illinois for non conference games against Lombard and Bradley Polytechnic. He reshuffles the lineup with Bloom moved to forward and Kirby Cook at guard while Captain Muilenberg may sit to rest for future conference tilts. Johnson likely travels but may see limited time due to an infected leg as Welzel could start versus Lombard.
The Tony Sarg Marionettes return to Cornell presented as Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. Margaret Skewis, known to Cornellians, joins the troupe after developing puppets and performing independently. The afternoon show details remain to be announced.
A breakfast of waffles syrup sausage and hot coffee will be served for twenty five cents a plate by home economics majors in the home economics dining room on the third floor of Old Sem on Saturday morning from eight until ten o clock. Money earned will help furnish the tea room.
