Dr. Haridas T. Muzumdar, sociology and economics professor at William Penn College in Oskaloosa, will speak in chapel Tuesday February 6 and again at 7 30 p m on the topic India and the United Nations Dilemma.
Shirley Jenkins of Des Moines elected president of the Women’s Athletic Association for the current term and next year’s first semester. Ruth Beck announces the result. New officers include Marjoriel Lievense as vice president Janet Hyde as secretary and Katharine Safford as freshman secretary. Dr Muzumdar, Gandhi biographer, to speak. International Club members admitted free, others pay twenty five cents. Dr Muzumdar to head a Tuesday discussion on Soul Force.
Ten students enrolled at Cornell for the second semester, a group of six women and four men from Iowa Illinois and Missouri. Names include Joan Singer Independence Iowa Helen Bell Stone Washington Marjorie Koenig Burlington John Watts Grand Junction Keith Chader Kansas City Missouri Lila Rupp Franklin Park Illinois Barbara Stowe Donna Russell Howard Reep and George Williamson Chicago.
Dr. A. A. Knowlton Reed College physics professor from Portland visited Cornell last Sunday to gather data on reorganizing Reed education department and to learn about a Reed summer workshop. Reed College is noted as among the nation’s leading experimental colleges.
College Youth Fellowship meets Sunday evening February 4 for worship with organ sermonettes by Martha Jane Tinder. All students and refresher personnel are welcome in the Methodist church sanctuary from 7 to 7 30 p m.
Cornell confirms two alumni dead in World War II. Paul Reynolds of Dixon Iowa who attended 1942-43 died in action in Belgium after serving in infantry then paratroopers. Paul Hanson of Muscatine Iowa was killed in France on January 7 while serving with the infantry.
Schedule lists Navy versus Cedar Rapids YMCA wrestling and swimming at 7 30 p m at the gymnasium on Saturday. Faculty at home Sunday features a college youth fellowship at seven p m. Writers' Club meets Monday at 4 10 p m in Altoona hall. Muzumdar lecture Tuesday at 7 30 p m in the chapel. Norton Geology club meets Wednesday at 7 15 p m in Room 39 Law building.
Faculty invite students and Refresher men to Saturday night gatherings at 8. Dean King leads name games while the Hendersons present cartoons and records. Toppy Tull plays guitar and Doc Miner shares geology slides. Beth Vandenberg chairs the committee with Sones Wakey Wallin Stone Tullis Searls Rowland Marshall and Lt. Goodwin.
Dr Edwin Mims who was to speak here last Wednesday has postponed the visit until the latter part of February.
Dr. Stephen Corey of the University of Chicago will visit campus Friday February 9 to speak in chapel and meet students on curricular and extracurricular factors shaping student development. He will discuss college structures, small college benefits, and the role of music in education as part of a four day conference beginning April 13 in Indianapolis.
Lt. Sam Schwab of the Dallas Dottie Fortress piloted a B 17 on a Merseburg mission when flak disabled engines 1 and 2. With 3 engines down and oxygen low, Schwab set course for home and forced a dangerous landing, the aircraft clipping a post and stopping in a ditch near a house after a harrowing two hour flight on two engines.
Al Bert Johnson’s new farce Love Your Neighbor opens in Cornell theatre with a small town Iowa wedding plot. Tessy Vashki daughter of Czech and Dutch parents, just earned a bachelor’s degree as chaos unfolds from a sting by a neighborly beekeeper ex marine and a tangle of twins, dowagers, and civic folk. The premiere is set for Friday and Saturday March 2 and 3. Cast details will be announced next week.
