Cornell S A T C unit demobilized after two and a half months

Captain Tooze commends SATC cadets at Cornell for building a disciplined unit in two and a half months. Despite Spanish flu and barracks life, most men are expected to make creditable college records. Final discharge and pay were postponed to Monday after December 15 due to the Sunday date.

S. A. T. C. Officers Await Discharges and Departures

Officers of the S. A. T. C. have not yet received discharges though expected daily. Lieuts Lewis and Mershon and Captain Hunter likely first to leave. Obey and Fulton to remain longer. Cornell regrets losing the officers and Gladys Heck of Lyons Iowa dies at Rock Island from pneumonia after influenza. Heck was a 1916 summer school student and worked in the Industrial Engineering Section of the Rock Island Arsenal.

Roe Howard a Cornell Hero in France

Miss Mildred Streed of Wood Hill Illinois died Saturday from pneumonia after a Spanish influenza infection. A violin soloist and saxophonist with the Ladies Military Band she planned to sail for France soon. She often visited her uncle A B Killer and La Verne Killer in Oakville. Lieut Harold Butsloff returned to Charlotte Iowa after several days on campus.

The Aomans have elected officers: President Merle Steffin, Vice President Edith Norrish, Recording Secretary Bertha Sand vold, Corresponding Secretary Ilo Crab tree, Censor Mable Osher. First Degree Initiation occurred Monday with pledges wearing coats and hats backward and saluting old members on campus.

Death of Lieut Chester R Howard 1917 Cornellian Hero

The war department awarded the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieut Chester R Howard of the One Hundred and Fourth Infantry for extraordinary heroism at Trugny France on July 22 1918. He refused evacuation under heavy fire until a third wound incapacitated him. He died October 16 in France, a beloved Cornell alumnus known for football music and leadership.
