An experimental method in Vocational Survey classes asks students to rate peers on native ability, industry, character, and more using three blanks. Each rating remains anonymous to the subject. Students also list three faculty members who know them to provide additional judgment.
Grant C. Miller of Chicago and Ru bee Pearse of Des Moines, both Cornell graduates, visited campus this week to discuss possible sites for additional buildings and the Marion Law memorial science building. Their talk with President Updegraff accompanied illustrations for a chapel address urging respect for college rules and thorough preparation for life work.
Cornell seniors of the class of 1924 announce a hard-time party Monday night to console each other. The event promises an admission of ten cents and a chance to win a total prize of five thousand dollars, a lure to ease their penniless condition.
Dr Ernest L Harris a Cornell College graduate class of 1894 was initiated into Phi Beta Kappa during a Wednesday faculty dinner. His career spanned Heidelberg studies law service to the US government consular roles in Germany Turkey Sweden and Siberia and he currently serves as consul general in Singapore. He shared experiences from his career at the event.
The second games of the class basketball series are scheduled for tomorrow after the Penn game. Sophs vs Juniors and Freshmen vs Seniors headline the day with the Sophomores aiming to rebound after a close loss to the Seniors. The third year men look strongest and favor a win over the Sophomores, while the Seniors are favored to beat the Freshmen, who remain a dark horse until they show their shooting ability.
Caroline Yaw presented T. C. Davis play The Turning in the lower chapel with an original engaging reading. The performance traced Steve Hardy’s control over his wife Helen and their daughter Kate as life choices clash with his possessive stance. Helen’s longing for independence and art study, and Kate’s potential master touch, emerge through a restrained yet sympathetic portrayal.
Over fifty new members were received into the Y W C A last night during a candlelight service in the lower chapel. Florence Butcher sang after the service and brief talks were given by Ruth Jayne and Miss Mutschler.
Ruth Horner and Katherine Irvine announce a campus song contest for Cornell senior women. Four undergraduate classes submit class and college songs, plus a faculty unit submits both entries. A college sing follows with class and faculty performances. New songs will be published in book form.
Readable replies from colleges show a trend toward inter class activity control. Lawrence College in Appleton Wisconsin describes All College Day with a student senate guided program including football, tug of war, bag rush and burying the hatchet, all under upperclassman and faculty supervision. The day ends with a faculty versus senior class baseball game and strict adherence to rules.
Dr. Oscar M. Voorhees of New York City, secretary of the United Chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, visited the college. He spoke at the faculty men's dinner and later at the local chapter about the society’s founding at William and Mary and gave an address on scholarship and character as factors in life.
Walter Cherry, president of the J. G. Cherry Manufacturing Co of Cedar Rapids, speaks on Management of the J. G. Cherry Company at 4 00 PM in lower chapel on December 18. He discusses scientific management and efficiency in dairy machinery production. The talk lasts forty minutes with a twenty minute Q A session. open to the entire student body.
If plans materialize, Cornell will build a skating rink in Ash Park this winter. Surveyors have prepared the ground below the baseball diamond and plan to flood it by damming a brook running through the park. Work will start soon, but success is not guaranteed and bad weather could push the project to next year.
Lois Beers won first place among one hundred fifty health posters displayed at the gym yesterday. Sarah Durne and Elsie Phelps tied for second, Viola Light earned third, and honorable mention went to Isabelle Olson Eoma Clemans Margaret VanLeer Eunice sy Winnifred VanNeff Margaret Carter Helen Hawley Bernice Hebner Ruth Yates Alma Brounek and Mildred Sawyer.
The Purple quintet prepares for the season opener against Penn after recent scrimmages showing improved offense and defense. Captain Whitlock Hauser and Bosely return as veterans, while Penn tests new players before their Mt. Vernon visit and Friday night clash with Coe.
Sixteenth century paintings inspired by the Nativity join the season’s music in the Cornell library. Miss Lathe places six Madonna and Child works, including Raphael's Sistine Madonna and The Madonna of the Chair, alongside prints and color plates from International Studio. The exhibit features Flemish German Italian and English interpretations of the Nativity.
About fifty more volumes were added to the college library's mathematics department. Twenty two volumes are from the Transactions of the American Mathematical Society. The purchases were funded by the Mary Esty Aldrich Williams fund.
Karl Detzer, a successful adventure writer, will speak Monday at four at the English Club in the society hall third floor Main. He has had forty stories accepted in the last year.
