Franklin Littell led a study showing 22 upperclassmen not in any social group, 16 transfers or old members ineligible this semester, and 83 freshmen not rushing. Women totals include 94 active group members and 35 upperclass women eligible but unaffiliated. Continued on page 4.
Professor Robert Leeper of the psychology department has learned his piece The Role of Motivation in Learning Differential Motivational Control of Utilization of Habits will appear in March in the Journal of Genetic Psychology. The study covers his work conducted at the University of Chicago.
The Social committee will sponsor a stag dance at the gymnasium this Friday at 7 30 p m. It will be the last dance of the year with music by Robert Choate's orchestra. Admission is twenty five cents.

Stark Young novelist and critic author of So Red the Rose was scheduled to speak January 30 but suffered a sciatic nerve injury in a small operation. He is unable to continue the lecture tour and another lecturer must be secured to fill the vacancy with Professor Clyde Tull seeking student or faculty suggestions.
Arthur Young freshman debate coach outlines the year’s schedule and questions. Fourteen trainees prepare for the Federal Aid for Education and Munitions topics, with Dec 12 and Jan 9 local debates set and travel to Fort Dodge planned for Jan 10 and 11.
Dr. A. C. Trowbridge state geologist and member of the State Board of Conservation will speak to the Science club in the geology lecture room on Wednesday December 12 at 7 00. He will discuss The Program of the Iowa State Planning Board.
Dr. Russell Cooper recalls meeting Matsuoka at a Geneva press tea in December 1933 and observing the Japanese envoy’s calm stance as Japan faced a decisive vote on aggression. After a lengthy speech translated for delegates, Matsuoka and aides abruptly left the chamber, signaling Japan's withdrawal from the League, while questions centered on pastries and tea rather than the policy.
Cornell's Christmas Kiddie Book edited by Charlotte Radcliff will print Friday. For nine years students have enjoyed it as a children’s gift with sixteen linoleum cuts from the art department led by Nama Lathe and advisory editor Clyde Tull. Contributors include Iris Street Marguerite Rowley Newland Louise Rich Julie Hobbs Atkinson Charlotte Radl ist Jane Synwolt Mae Peery Hutchinson and others.
Thornton Wilder one act play The Long Christmas Dinner directed by Carl Weber is in rehearsal for four performances. First show Friday at 3:00 for the speech department. second at Purple Masquez’s Christmas party Saturday afternoon. third and fourth public performances next week on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Cast includes Roderick Sr his wife Lucia William Bolles Lucille Roach The Grandmother Virginia Lichty Cousin Brandon George Snyder.
President H. J. Burgstahler continues his tour and will speak in Chicago on Wednesday December 12 at a Cornell alumni meeting. He will address The Future of Small Colleges and is expected to return to the campus Thursday morning.
A Christmas tea dance for active and associate W A A members will be held Monday December 17 at 4 00 pm in the social rooms Decorations will be arranged by Marjorie Hughes and Helen Deal will oversee refreshments A short program includes a tap dance by Elizabeth Friesner Initiation will be held during the event.
Three poems by Charlotte M Radcliff appear in the Minnesota Verse anthology. The collection includes Lasal tude winner of a Midwest high school contest sponsored by the Husk two years ago and two other pieces Defiance and Gifts. A brief biographical note accompanies the verse.
Prof John E Toms of Penn College Oskaloosa will sing tenor solos in The Messiah. He previously sang Haydns The Seasons with the Cornell Oratorio Society. Francis German and Ruth Pinkerton also sing solos with Olive June Lacey as soprano.
The Art club will present a stained glass lecture by Joseph Reynolds the first Friday after Christmas vacation January 11. The talk features over eighty slides, mostly color, and is arranged through the American Federation of Arts in Washington, D. C. It is a reread at the request of many interested attendees.
The thirty first presentation of The Messiah will be Sunday December 16 at 3 00 in the chapel directed by Prof Harold W Baltz head of the conservatory of music It marks his seventh year as director The chorus will perform Lift Up Your Heads and All We Like Sheep is sung for the third time Horace Alden Miller and Miss Helen Venn will play organ and piano Miller has been part of The Messiah since early presentations and Venn has accompanied the oratorio for six years A selected instrumental group will accompany solo parts with the string section trained for the occasion Continues on page 8
The new International club organized Friday with twenty students present. Charles Mason was elected president, Frank lin Littell secretary and treasurer. The group plans biweekly meetings starting Tuesday to discuss current international topics such as the Hungarian Jugoslavia conflict and will affiliate with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
The Madrigal club under Ruth Pinkerton will headline the student recital Wednesday at 4:00 in the chapel. Twenty six conservatory students will participate in the program.
A group of twelve Cornell students aims to travel around the world by Christmas, covering about 25 000 miles. They will visit Chicago and other cities, cross major rivers, and complete the journey in roughly forty eight hours at speeds near 540 miles per hour. Estimated fare starts around 1400 dollars.
