In a tight two to one decision the Affirmative Zetagathian team defeated the Negative Amphic tyons over the German system of Industrial Insurance in the United States. Van Pelt Hutchison Smith Walker led strong rebuttals and steady deliveries, while overall tone suffered from sarcasm and uneven memory work.
After two weeks of practice the basketball team shows better ball handling and defense. Players Bowen Torrance and West lead guard duties while Torrence Grigsby Byerly and Walker star in the forward and center spots. Schedule lists games at Iowa City Mt Vernon Cedar Rapids Des Moines Indianola Oskaloosa and Mount Vernon with Grinnell tests pending.
In memory of Colonel Henry H. Rood Cornell college and Mount Vernon honor a valued trustee. He served Cornell for forty eight years on the board and forty seven as secretary, noted for exactness, industry, and courtesy. His public spirit and steady leadership left a lasting, sweet influence on the community.
Thirteen Cornellians and a faculty member toured Cedar Rapids to study city governance. They visited city hall, the clerk’s office, and the commissioner of streets, learning about river dam plans and cedar block paving while the group was greeted by Commissioner J. H. Hughes. The visit included inspections of council records from 1856 and modern typescripts, with emphasis on assessments and finances.
At a meeting of the football men Henry Frei was unanimously elected captain for 1916. Known for steady consistent play, Frei has appeared in nearly every game this season and is expected to be a top guard in the state next year. Prospects for a championship remain uncertain with key stars departing and many strong players ready to step in.
The Messiah, Handel is praised as one of the great oratorios. Written in Dublin in 1742 to aid prisoners, it gained early fame and charity impact. It premiered in London in 1748 with King George II inspiring a standing ovation. The work grew from Handel’s mature genius and text from scripture.
Frank Speaight’s Wednesday recital in the Auditorium drew a full house of Dickens lovers and newcomers alike. He portrayed Pickwick, Weller, and others with natural acting, facial expression, and minimal exaggeration, earning praise for true character likeness and a lively, effortless performance. The Mount Vernon and Cornell audiences will welcome his return.
