The Purple Masquers announce a second annual play writing contest with thirty five dollars in prizes and production of the three best plays. Last year winners included Jere Annis John Schenken and Kathryn Fenstermacher. Entries close January 20 with final judging by an impartial party.
Miss Ruth Howard, buyer at Patricia Petite Shop in Killian's Cedar Rapids store, tells a vocational survey class that department store work for women is stimulating and exact. She cites four essentials industry intuition initiative and character and notes six positions are open to women in the field.
Dwight Wilcox of Prof. F. M. McGaw's calculus class spoke on Descartes rule of science during regular class hours. The class follows a custom where upperclass members present topics of interest. A later talk is planned for the week. Transformation of equations was discussed by Albert Nelson Eleanor Shaw and Paul Seydel Friday.
The Art department yesterday received two plaster casts from Boston. They help students learn to draw portraits by simplifying the planes of the face.
Prof F M McGaw writes An Introduction to Astronomy for a six week orientation course at Cornell. The mimeographed notebook style text omits mathematics and draws most material from the author. Students supplement with library references to gain general astronomy knowledge and broader appreciation.
Senor Olly Pod makes a second appearance this year before Cornell students this evening. He remains similar to his fall debut. A black and white cover by Herb Rosengren accompanies the feature, with Marjorie Holmes’ Primer for Little Cornellians aiding reader diversion after McGuffey’s Second Reader.
The Purple Masquers call on the public to attend a 3 p m broadcast of Henrik Ibsen The Doll House at the Social Center next Friday December 12 The production by the National Broadcasting Company features Eva Le Gallienne and Dudley Digges in leading roles Le Gallienne founder of New York Civ ic Repertory Theatre and 1926 Pictorial Review Achievement award recipient.
The Cornell Gospel team led by Richard Baker and Paul Whiteford traveled from campus at 5:30 PM to Marion to conduct Epworth League and church services. Evelyn Green read aloud, Anna Zache sang, and Baker played the organ with Caroline Ho, Helen Ho, Bern ard Davis, and Roscoe Anderson assisting.
A four member committee Vera Wood Cecelia Holmes Genevieve Strawson and Marian Williams organizes the December Latin club program. The meeting will be held Thursday at 6 40 PM at the home of Prof and Mrs Mark E Hutchinson on Summit Avenue.
The Illinois club was entertained at the home of Prof and Mrs R A Nelson on Saturday night. A social hour led to a short business meeting Verne Derver of Lanark was elected president and Betty Harkness of Morrison was chosen social chairman for the ensuing year. Refreshments were served after the meeting.
President H J Burgstahler spent a weekend in Chicago at the Edgewater Beach Hotel for a committee meeting of 15 on the Liberal Arts Movement in America. Attendees included representatives from Cornell and Coe colleges East to the Atlantic. The Indianapolis program January 19 to 23 will feature four college meetings, with Cornell linked to the association of American Colleges and Liberal Arts Colleges. The aim is a broad publicity drive and a joint $200 million liberal arts fundraising appeal. A N Ward of Western Maryland College chairs the committee.
Prof Mark Hutchinson head of the Latin department and Coach Richard Barker spent the weekend in Chicago at the Hotel Sherman for a Midwest Conference meeting as members of the college athletic committee.
Dr. Neil E. Gordon of Johns Hopkins University announces a $1,000 annual chemistry fellowship under the National Fellowship Plan for scholars in your state. The gift by A. G. Pfeiffer of New York funds opportunities for both men and women, with Pfeiffer Hall linked to Henry Pfeiffer.
A 26 year tradition continues as 140 students rehearse Handel's Messiah with Chicago soprano Dorothy Bowen and baritone Frederic Jencks joining contralto Ruth Pinkerton and tenor F. Walter Huffman of Cornell. Music director Harold W. Baltz conducts the Cornell Symphony Orchestra and organist Horace A. Miller leads the soloists from the Conservatory.
The December Science Club meeting will be held in the geology lecture room on Friday December 12 at 7 p m. Dr Floyd A Nagler of the State University of Iowa will discuss Control of the water resources of the Mississippi River. Nagler is a senior engineer with the U S Government engineering office at Rock Island.
Under Karl E. Weiss a 200-voice Oratorio Society is being formed at the College of Puget Sound. Plans include presenting Handel's Messiah at Christmas. Weiss previously led the Cornell College Oratorio Society, also a 200-voice chorus.
The Cornell College endowment receives a total gift of 145000 dollars from personal friends of the college and its president H J Burgstahler. The gift includes 100000 dollars from private donors and 45000 dollars from the General Education Board. donors request anonymity for now.
Giovanni Lane, son of Prof and Mrs H C Lane, was arrested by a German policeman in Bonn after not understanding a large keep off the grass sign in a city park. The boy paid a fine after being brought before the court, and his parents found him walking away with the officer. Prof Lane is on a yearlong study leave in Germany.
Christmas carols arranged for string quartet by Lloyd Oakland will highlight the student recital Wednesday starting at 4:00 PM. The program includes classical a m ongs by Guilmant Bach Mendelssohn Pacini and others with soloists and ensembles, concluding with Dvorak and a violin choir.
Mrs. E. E. Pierce of Chicago who was injured in a prior automobile accident died last Sunday. She is the mother of Dorothy Pierce class of 1885 and Mrs. George Anslem.
