Three Cornell students Tom Devine Miles Willsey and William Soper secured the old Ink's Pond site near First Street to build a public ice rink with a warming house and refreshments. Plans include hockey and skating lessons with an admission of fifteen cents and possible skate rental if needed.
A class from the School of Commerce and Finance with about fifty students tours Cedar Rapids visiting the Quaker Oats plant. They are hosted by the Commercial Club with talks by Mr. Sinclair and club members. Lunch follows with streetcar transportation to the Sinclair plant. The trip showcases a major Iowa meat packing operation and big business practice.
In a series of meetings led by Miss Edith Helmer Cornell 11 territorial secretary of the YWCA the women students at Cornell gathered in the old day chapel. Her talks described the college girl’s attitude toward religion using the Belladonna Blindness metaphor to compare spiritual eyesight with the physical.
The campus mourns Dad Elliott as his frank talks and the Quitters message inspire a tougher moral tone. His influence deepens student conduct and ambition with a call to resist quitting in life and use influence for good. Continued on last page.
Professor Sidney L. Chandler becomes a member of the Cornell faculty after earlier studies at Morningside College where he earned an A.M. in 1899 and taught there as Dean of the Faculty and Professor of History from 1907 to 1914. He also studied at the Universities of Iowa and Columbia and has worked in schools ministry and on the chautauqua circuit.
Cornell fans expect a tough schedule as Iowa, Grinnell, Coe, Simpson, and Highland Park players boost strong lineups and fresh talent. Iowa brings back four starters Bannick Dutton Schiff and Von Lockum. Grinnell loses Parker Meek. Coe lists Yuill Martin Rust with newcomer Franks. Simpson returns with depth. Des Moines Penn and smaller schools also show promise.
The interclass basketball series begins this afternoon with juniors facing sophomores and freshmen meeting Cornell High. Both favorites seek to win the series, led by players from last year’s varsity and top newcomers. Schedule lists games through December with captains named.
The Milts team of Marvel Stockwell Vernon Vance and Leslie Parry defeated Amphies 2-1 in a tight debate on government ownership of all arms and munition plants for the US military. Sortor Schmidt and Devine led the affirmative while Stockwell Farry and Vance argued the negative.
