At a Saturday council meeting the Student Financial Relations committee and a Pep club from its own members will approve all ads and fundraisers by student groups that tap city businesses or students for money. The benefit game for injured football players is barred except the Pep club may host one fundraiser a year to help pay band uniforms.
College representatives from the Iowa conference will gather in Des Moines on Thursday to arrange winter schedules. Discussion will include Penn College of Oskaloosa possibly applying for admission, with hosts Highland Park College at the Savory.
A group portrait of Cornell students was shot Tuesday morning between the chapel and science hall using a rotary camera. The background features the chapel, and the scene includes students who might have feared exclusion, appearing at both ends of the frame. Irene Hanna Carrie Weigman and Clela Anderson were Cedar Rapids shoppers Monday.
Monday night the freshmen basketball players held four full scrimmages with four teams on the floor. Individual speed and flashes of talent stood out as Magrum Stansberry Grant O Banion Cooper Healy Hoadley Peterson and Kilmer showed promise despite lack of team play.
Sunday afternoon Dr Robert McBride of the First Presbyterian church Cedar Rapids gave the Vesper address urging young people to serve God and humanity. He preached on John 1 35 42 highlighting Andrew's search and service and urged sincere personal effort with music from the Vesper choir enhancing the service.
Workmen install electric lights in Science Hall as daylight shortens. The upgrade follows a series of campus improvements recently completed or planned to enhance study spaces and facilities.
Gruff Guide and Fair Visitor debate the reason behind Sunday closures of state exhibits. The guide asserts state ownership and union affiliation as justification.
The Messiah concert at 3:30 Sunday afternoon will be a college vesper service with no admission charge. The chorus and orchestra are strong, with soloists including Miss Tunnecliff Mr Welles and Miss Harriet Case making her first appearance. An intermission silver offering will support making this annual event a permanent feature.
Cedar Rapids will gain its first real inter urban station within two weeks. The old Fourth Avenue and Second Street garage, bought by Iowa Railway and Light, will be repaired for use by the Light company and by the Waterloo Cedar Falls Northern Interurban system. The modified building will feature a bagg age and check room, men and women restrooms, a well lit waiting area, three ticket windows, and a north section leased to James Dunn and Company for a restaurant.
The Sophomore class held its annual election of officers in the day chapel at four o'clock Monday afternoon. Ralf Grigsby was elected president, Grace Fox as vice president, Irene Flanigan as secretary, Paul Philips as treasurer, Mariss Walker as athletic representative.
The second preliminary intersociety debate is set for Friday evening at 7 45. The topic is adopting a system of industrial insurance like Germany. Zetagathians led by Robert Van Pelt Ralph Briggs and K C Smith support the affirmative while Amphictyon contestants Donald Hutchinson Marissa Walker and John Knight argue the negative. The question attracts current interest and both sides are regarded as strong.
The Aesthesian Literary Society hosted six New Cornell girls and Dean Mary MacLeod last Saturday. They traveled from Mt. Vernon to Cedar Rapids by interurban, dined at the Montrose with blue and gold decor, then watched the Strand Players perform A Woman's Way, ending the day with appreciative reactions to Montrose and Strand management.
Eighty Christophers met at the McGaws home last Friday at 5 30 for a three course supper prepared by the menu committee. Attendance rose by about fifteen, showing growing interest. The next business and social meeting is planned for January.
Frederick Morley, English pianist, presented the third Artist Recital in the College Auditorium. He performed a varied program including Rameau, Chopin, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, and Leschetisky. Despite a unfamiliar piano, his refined touch and restraint impressed the audience as he gained fluency in the latter pieces.
Julia Culp, famed soprano, returns to America with a first New York appearance since her European tour. The New York Times praised her voice richness, technique, phrasing, and diction ahead of her recital at Mt. Vernon next April.
