The December Ollapod will appear on campus next Tuesday evening at nine o'clock. The cover, by Herb Rosengren, Cornellian artist, has drawn praise in New York and Philadelphia shows this fall. The issue echoes the Freshman number with sharp drawing skill and satiric wit.
President H. J. Burgstahler left for Des Moines to attend the Iowa College Presidents Association. He then proceeded to Chicago for two days to join the Committee of 15 of Liberal Arts Colleges Movement meeting at Edgewater Beach Hotel.
Sophomore class voted yesterday in the lower chapel to stage Hamlet as their annual production. Coached by Prof. and Mrs. Clyde Tull, the sixth Shakespearean drama by second year students will feature a large cast with tryouts Saturday from 9 to 11 in the English rooms. All sophomores are urged to try out.
The violin choir directed by Mrs Helen M Cumming rehearsed in Lower Chapel and will perform an arrangement of the Largo from the New World Symphony at the student recital next Wednesday.
The scope of credit for courses in Secretarial Training has been broadened by recent faculty action so credit can be given for this work for any major in any department. To plan for the second semester, the department seeks to know the extent of material in this work. All interested are requested to see Mr. Mathews.
Fifteen new members were initiated into the W. A. A. at a hockey dinner held Wednesday evening at the Methodist church. Thirteen were freshmen including Ellen DeWolf Florence Wilson Isabelle Rigby and others. Esther Schlue and Etta Rasmussen received the degree. Letters were awarded to Betty Rumble Cecelia Holmes and Faye Gardner.
Professor Fernald urged discarding the T of I cant in a chapel speech last Tuesday. He offered historical background and described the talk as unusual and interesting. Wye SITTEbersole registrar Pv had been ill but returned to work Wednesday.
Prof F M McGaw of Cornell University mathematics department is finishing a new textbook titled Introduction to Astronomy intended for use in his classes. The mimeographed work will run about 60 pages and is expected to be printed soon with further announcements to follow on its college use.
Cornell football sophomore Lee Adamson recounts a two week stay at a Wisconsin logging camp with Henry Herman a former Capone gang member and bootlegger. The pair drank hunted and Herman repeatedly fired a .22 revolver while Adamson eventually took the gun to prevent harm. Adamson recalls bears porcupines and wild stories from lumberjacks before planning to return home.
The Women's Glee Club directed by Ruth Pinkerton will present its annual Christmas carol program in the chapel auditorium Sunday evening December 7 at 7 30. Dorothy Nyweide will accompany the club with Harold W Baltz organist F Walter Huffman tenor and the Madrigal Singers assisting. The program includes Organ Solo Christmas Fantasy Foote Baltz Processional O Come All Ye Faithful and other pieces.
The Aguilar Lute Quartet headlines the second Artist Recital Course number drawing concertgoers with hazy knowledge of the instrument. On first US tour they captivated listeners with delicate shading and color despite its novelty, delivering a program ranging from descriptive pieces to a Mozart Sonata.
Walter Ratcliffe returned Monday from the tenth annual Oxford Fellowship conference in Grove City Pennsylvania. He praised the delegates as surprisingly conservative and said the local group has a broad program. Next year’s convention will be at Lawrence College Appleton Wisconsin with Neal Klasner reelected president. James Delahook 80 was unable to attend. a local delegate took his place. Ratcliffe briefed the local group Thursday evening.
Dr. Frank J. Miller, visiting Latin professor at the University of Iowa, will address on December 9 in the Geology lecture room at 6 40 about The Motivation of the Celebration of Vergil's Birthday. Miller is emeritus at the University of Chicago and former editor of the Classical Journal. He is noted for translating Seneca and Ovid and for editing Latin texts.
The article notes Preachers Kids or P. K. at Cornell formed ten years ago and now has forty members. Six upperclassmen earned high honors last year among editors of campus publications musicians and students active in dramatics and athletics.
In Prof. C F Littell’s classroom a lively freshmen sophomores debate followed the resolution that states should adopt compulsory unemployment insurance with employer contributions. On the affirmative were Manley Goodrick Kathryn Popp and Richard Tims coached by Basil Raffety. on the negative were Nina Pritchard Arthur Crosby and Rolland Philpot.
Fifteen students and four instructors attended the Writers' Club meeting in the YMCA room on Tuesday evening. Members read love poems, a play The Silent Buddha by George Tracy, and short stories by Lee Grove and Marion Triggs. Criticism was constructive and lively.
The Purple Masquers held a meeting to plan the initiation of pledges set for December 18. President Charles Brewster will appoint the initiation committees. Professor W Earl Beem will attend the national convention of speech instructors in Chicago on December 28.
The Messiah by Handel will be performed in the college chapel on Sunday afternoon December 14. First presented by the Oratorio Society at Cornell in 1907, it became an annual event with the college orchestra providing accompaniment. Prof. Horace A. Miller has directed the orchestra since the start.
Mrs Freer widow of Dean Freer was struck in the back by a car around four PM Wednesday while crossing Second Avenue in Cedar Rapids. She was taken to St Lukes hospital with a broken thigh bone and is listed in critical condition though improving.
Walt Gray alumni secretary will assist in the program of the National Alumni Association meeting in Kansas City at the Kansas City Athletic Club. Delegates from Nebraska Iowa Kansas North and South Dakota Oklahoma and Missouri will attend. Gray will lead a discussion on Alumni Problems in the Endowed College. Hazel Hamrick ex 32 visited the campus last week.
The Womens Glee club made its first appearance at Cornell in chapel singing Christmas carols under director Miss Ruth A. Pinkerton on Thursday morning.
Ruth Van Buren reports backstage impressions of the Aguilar brothers and sister after a North American concert tour. The quartet, trained as university graduates, discuss Spanish culture, beauty, and music, noting that Spain’s people focus on art and love rather than politics.
