Our Town Comedy Brings Stage Life to Bare-Cabaret Style

The little theatre presents Thornton Wilder’s Our Town on Friday and Saturday at 8 pm with no scenery beyond a few chairs. Grace West, Ruth Weber, Jean Harris, and Robert Hartung headline a costumed cast mapping scenes from courtship to death under restrained lighting.

Bob Hoopes won over four rivals at a Sophomore class meeting to become editor of the 1941 Royal Purple. The Park Ridge Illinois native will succeed Gleb Fedorin as editor and will assist through May with the yearbook’s final issues.

No Chapel Thursday Phi Beta Kappa Test Scene

At 8 42 Thursday all signed up for the Phi Beta Kappa contest report to the Methodist church basement. Phomores from A to B meet in room 11 Lay building while other sophomores go to the lower chapel. Chapel omitted with 324 taking the general culture test and 150 entering the contest.

North Central Tri Beta Conference Set for Palisades Park

The North Central region will hold its Beta Beta Beta conference at Palisades State Park on April 28 and 29 with 80 to 100 attendees. Iota Epsilon at Cornell hosts. six faculty members will participate. Activities include a symposium on The Effective Chapter, a Friday banquet by H. S. Jaques, and Saturday field biology trips supervised by faculty. George Mann of Iowa Epsilon will be toastmaster.

Orchesis To Present Spring Dance Recital Friday May 19

Orchesis Society announces its annual spring recital to be held Friday evening May 19. After more than a month of preparation, the program features new dances in groups of six to eight, duets, and solos. Anyone who has studied modern dance and wishes to participate should report to the gym tomorrow night at 7 p.m. Rehearsals run each Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and attendance is required.

Twelve Colleges Represented At Y Conference

One hundred thirty one delegates from 12 Iowa colleges attended the Y leadership training conference at Palisades Park last weekend. Elbert Beaver was elected state chairman and area representative on the area council. Annabelle Anderson of Iowa University was elected women's chairman. Dean Shelson Beatty of Grinnell gave keynote addresses on campus Y duty. A vote to make the Geneva Conference coeducational was approved. Iowa State College led with 27 delegates followed by Iowa State University with 23. Other schools included Grinnell Coe Iowa State Teachers Morningside Dubuque Penn Central Upper Iowa Simpson and Cornell.

President Burgstahler to Attend Methodist Conference

President H. J. Burgstahler leaves for Kansas City to join the Methodist Uniting Conference aimed at merging the Methodist Episcopal, Methodist Episcopal South, and Methodist Protestant churches into a single Methodist Church. About 48 million members and 800 delegates are expected to participate. Burgstahler will join the education committee.

Minority Groups Discussed By Five Iowa Religious Leaders

Five Iowa religious leaders will lead a one day Forum Conference at Cornell on April 26 as part of an Institute of Human Relations. Topics focus on Judaism Catholicism and Protestantism amid rising intolerance and question democracy's meaning. Speakers include Willard Johnson Father Robert Walsh Rabbi Eugene Mannheimer and Rev Stoddard Lane all from Des Moines with sessions on making America safe for differences combating prejudice propaganda and Christian Jewish contributions to democracy.

Higbie Elected Cornellian Editor for 1939 40

Charles Higbie class of 1940 was chosen editor of the 1939 40 Cornellian. Martin Kesttenbaum 1940 was reelected business manager. Higbie, a junior and political science major, previously edited Mount Vernon High School paper and has served as campus editor and Cornell representative for United Press. He will succeed Kathleen Wilson 740 next fall.

Rumors that a new Cornell college president has been chosen are unfounded. The nominating committee will likely finish its work at Commencement, but the full committee awaits the legislature's adjournment. Members named December include W. R. Burgstahler and Probasco Honored at Cornell Faculty Dinner

President Burgstahler and Miss Abbie Probasco were guests of honor at a surprise dinner by the Cornell faculty at the Cedar Rapids Country Club. A movie camera was presented to Burgstahler and a coffee service to Probasco by Professors Rich and Tull. About 65 attendees were present.
