General William Rufus Shafter retired U S Army died at 12 45 p m today at the home of Capitan W H McKittrick south of this city after a brief illness following a fall from the polls. He was born October 1 1835 in Michigan and entered the military in 1861. He commanded the American army in Cuba during the Spanish American War and received the Medal of Honor for bravery at Santiago. He was promoted to major general in 1897 and retired in 190? after a long service record including the Civil War and Reconstruction.
