Miss Jewell Johnson wed Chas F. Gare of Tulsa Oklahoma in a ceremony at the home of Dr. and Mrs. G. M. Hurley. Soldier Hero Samuel Mares Buried With Impressive Rites
The first Union Cowboy from the World War era buried in Clayton, Samuel Mares, son of Domingo Mares, born 1888 at Barney, North Dakota, died in France after a German shell strike. He enlisted in 1917, served with Company D of the 361st Regiment, 91st Division, and survived Miller Hill before dying at the Argonne. His body arrived last Sunday and burial was a full military ceremony conducted by the American Legion and local church and firing squad.
