Dr H R Mills Leaves Clayton for Las Vegas Work

Dr H R Mills ends a five year Clayton pastorate as he accepts church appointment in Las Vegas. His leadership built a new 815,000 church, spurred civic projects, and boosted Clayton’s profile through Rotary and Chautauqua activities. Mrs Mills also contributed. farewell sermon planned for Sunday.

Layton Man Honored at Legion Convention

Jake Lujan returned from the state American Legion convention in Luver City as a delegate from Fred J. Tuttle Post of Clayton and earned the elected junior vice commander. He joined a busy program with banquets, entertainment, and a boxing card by Ft Bayard soldiers, and toured El Paso with twenty NM delegates to the Texas gathering. He reports strong recitations and lively events, praising Silver Gily and Juarez bullfights with minor revolutions observed at the boxing match.

Bean and Grain Inspector Appointed in Clayton

The Farm Bureau names Mr. A. B. Chilcote as inspector of beans corn broomcorn and other farm products sold in Clayton to ensure quality grades and fair prices for farmers. Clayton buyers will accept bonded weigher weights and assist in funding the inspector. Local supporters include M. C. Johnson Wv L Baer G. G. Granville N. J. Azar and J. J. Swagforty Mire. Katherine Bronkhoret, sister of Mrs. L. D. Boggs, leaves Clayton for Bethany Mo after two weeks visit.

Young Married People Social Hosted by Clayton Class

The Young Married People’s class of the Christian church led by J. F. Lunsford held a delightful social in the church parlor last Thursday. Attendees enjoyed parlor games, light refreshments followed, and the class noted growth as one of the city’s best and most active. Clayton’s young marrieds not enrolled are invited to join this winter series of events.

Pretty Home Wedding Unites Jewell Johnson and Chas Gare

Miss Jewell Johnson wed Chas F. Gare of Tulsa Oklahoma in a ceremony at the home of Dr. and Mrs. G. M. Hurley. The archway aisle featured six flower girls and a ring bearer as Amy Whitson played the wedding march. Reverend Lumsford officiated. The bride, a 1921 graduate and active church worker, plans to reside in Tulsa. Rice shower greeted the newlyweds at the depot before a farewell breakfast follows.

County Fair Set for Thursday and Friday Show

Farmers and country people urged to attend the Union County Fair next week in the county seat. The two day event will showcase livestock and grain with emphasis on agricultural success. Promoters Tarlton and Lunsford promise a good program and a quality show for all who rely on farming and ranching.

County Superintendent Marte M. Myers asks teachers to bring schoolchildren to the Union County Fair on Friday October Tth for educational benefit. All children under 12 admitted free when accompanied by a teacher or parent. if school is held, absences will be excused for attendance.

Soldier Hero Samuel Mares Buried With Impressive Rites

The first Union Cowboy from the World War era buried in Clayton, Samuel Mares, son of Domingo Mares, born 1888 at Barney, North Dakota, died in France after a German shell strike. He enlisted in 1917, served with Company D of the 361st Regiment, 91st Division, and survived Miller Hill before dying at the Argonne. His body arrived last Sunday and burial was a full military ceremony conducted by the American Legion and local church and firing squad.

Booker visitors bring Iowa guest to Big Springs Community

Mr and Mrs J A Booker of the Big Springs Community hosted Mrs Booker’s brother Frank Steen who rode the train home to Iowa. He praised New Mexico and hinted at possibly settling someday in Union County while Herman Bruns, longtime Claytonite now living elsewhere, also visited town and settled accounts with the local office.

Married in Chamber of Commerce Rooms

A wedding was held in the Chamber of Commerce room with Rev. J F P Lunsford officiating. Ora Raymond Stewart of Delfin Ohio married Mint Vinnie Pay Johnson. The couple, who plan a brief Trinidad visit, are farm folks. Mea Stewart is Jewell Johnson’s sister.

Mrs Harry Keener Sent to Trinidad for Operation

Mrs Harry Kerner wife of the News foreman was taken to San Raphael hospital in Trinidad on Monday for an operation. Dr Freesanan performed the surgery and report says she is doing nicely. She is expected to return home in a week or two. Mr Keener and Mr W A Betty accompanied her. Mrs Getty plans to return home Sunday.
