Joseph Gill representing the local council spoke at City Hall in Clayton Tuesday night urging stronger and more complete organization of all war work forces. His brief message aimed to mobilize local defense efforts and rally community support.
The Colorado to Gulf Highway in Union County will be graded from its entry at Dedman to the Texas line to serve tourist traffic and link to a Great Military Highway. State and county funds will cover part of the work, with private subscriptions raising about 35,000 dollars to complete the 16,000 dollar target. Work to start in days, aided by petitions led by Chairman Tom Edmonson.
A mix of residents and visitors including Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Knowles of Seneca and Mrs. Francis J. Burghart of Dalehart in Clayton for days of business and visits. Several locals including J. M. Gibbons from the Land Office, Elfredo Salazar filing final proof, and Dr DArmour en route from Mexico to Colorado. A local death notice reports Mrs. Alice Stone died after a long illness at Clayton hospital.
Mr and Mrs Russel Henderson leave Friday to settle in Niotaze Kansas where they will make their home. They have completed final proof on their homestead eighty miles northwest of town. The News will follow their move and note their departure as a loss to the community.
Bids for the four year contract to carry mail on the Dalhart Thomas route were submitted at the Dalhart post office. Service starts July 1. Sedan residents visiting Dalhart voiced satisfaction that the Postal Department will provide this route.
Professor Earl Martin of the local High School faculty married Miss Eva Koontz of Bloomington Indiana on Saturday morning May 14 at the Baptist church with Fr Graham officiating. The couple met in Dalbart and traveled together from Indiana for the ceremony.
Mansker School and community residents will present an entertainment at the school on Friday May 24. A small admission will be charged with half the proceeds to the Red Cross and the remainder to the school improvement fund.
Senator C. H. Allderedge former state senator from Quay county and Democratic candidate for District Judge visited Tucumcari this week. He spent time here inspecting weak spots in the political fences and gathering support for his candidacy.
County Clerk Abeyta issued licenses to Albert J. Burl ton of Roy and Miss Nora Beach of ate and to EP Stauffer and Miss Ethel Smith, both of Mt. Dora, authorizing their marriages.
Union County launches a Red Cross fund drive starting Monday May 26 to raise six thousand dollars locally toward the national goal of one hundred million dollars. The campaign runs one week and ends Monday May 27 with soliciting committees named across the county. Clayton hosts three nine-member committees led by Captains Mrs Pat Valverde Mrs Walton Snyder and Mrs John Hill.
In reporting Liberty Bonds sales of the third issue, Clayton National Bank appears with a $5,000 subscription while not previously listed by the Federal Reserve Bank. The bank faced no allotment, and a crash at Pioneer Garage caused minor injuries to a man who is recovering. Officials hope for a complete community subscription list in a future issue.
Lane Goen departed late in the week for Joplin Missouri to attend a miners convention in that region. He travels from Lane’s home area to participate in the gathering with regional mining leaders and supporters.
Mrs J T Howard and her daughter in law Mrs A B Palmer of Kenton spent the last week in Clayton visiting relatives in Texas before returning home.
In Clayton the sale of War Savings Stamps is brisk and the 25000 allotment may sell quickly if current momentum continues. County Chairman Bob Isaacs reports every merchant is selling them, Kruth's Pharmacy leads by selling its hundred dollar allotment in week one, and all stores hold two to five hundred dollar allotments. A boxed list details the stores offering stamps.
Congressman W B Wale has worked to secure relief for entrants under the stock raising homestead act known as the 610 acre art. A USGS report states land classification work in Clayton Tacomearr and Haswell districts is complete and work in the rest of the state is progressing rapidly.
A Dedman rancher W. Coffey was killed when his car lost control on La Bajada Hill near Santa Fe. He died instantly as the vehicle plunged over an embankment while his wife and grandson walked nearby. Survived by his widow, a son and daughter in Dedman, and three sons in Oklahoma. Remains shipped to Dedman for burial.
Clayton Chapter of the American Red Cross reports 731 knitted garments 3977 gauze bandages 144 hospital bandages and more shipped to division headquarters. The Red Cross rooms at the Court House bustle daily with volunteers aided by Royal Neighbors and Eastern Star. The school board provided rear frame building for sewing and garment work starting next week.
The board of trustees designated May 27 to June 3 as cleanup week at a regular meeting. Trustee Claggett moved to urge residents to clean up back yards and alleys, with the city bearing rubbish hauling costs while citizens handle their own yard debris.
Jes. Mute and Daniels of Clayton head Medical Reserve Corps officers have been training at Camp Funston and are ordered overseas by the 20th. They have furloughs to visit families and settle affairs before sailing. They look forward to active service and will return to Funston briefly before embarking for an Atlantic port.
Mrs. Sm Henton, a well known resident of Clayton, died Saturday night after a long illness with consumption. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, Rev. Wills of the Baptist Church officiating. Interment was in the local cemetery. The sympathy of the community goes to the bereaved husband and family.
The Baptist Ladies Aid will meet Tuesday with Mrs. A. C. Loveless to discuss society tasks and upcoming activities. Members are urged to attend and share news and plans for community service.
