May 2 in Santa Fe, Governor Lindsey delivers a brief special session message urging rapid state measures. He calls for recruiting the full soldier quota, financing farm seeds and labor, and mobilizing county agents and unemployed youth for agriculture, while empowering a war committee to oversee wartime operations.
Lieutenants Luna Bergere and Jow el Yerview of Santa Fe arrived in Clayton and began recruiting volunteers for the New Mexico militia. They seek ages 18 to 45, had 34 recruits by 10:30 this morning, stay until Tuesday afternoon, and will take volunteers to Santa Fe. A conscription bill may foreclose further enlistments once signed by the governor. Officers expect to double the list and invite farmers, bankers, seed men, and merchants to a meeting at the Pixie theater next Saturday at 7:20 to support aid for farmers and boost Home Guard interest.
Leading cattlemen Harrell and Hamm, of the south county, launched their spring roundup at the Harrell ranch. They expect completion by the 20th inst, gathering about 1,300 head including 250 yearling heifers, 100 two-year-old biters, and around 600 cows. Buyers note the date of final roundup.
