Union County New Mexico shows rising land values as dry farming expands crops like beans and corn. Immigrant settlement boosted entry, with about 200 000 acres still open. land now sells up to 60 70 dollars per acre. Cattle, dairy ventures and irrigation projects emerge as future growth drivers for prosperity.
The Clayton News announces a sixty day program giving each child under sixteen two 25 cent War Savings Stamps for every paid in advance year of subscription. It offers a $5 Baby Bond for eight yearly prepaid subscriptions and an extra $5 Baby Bond to the first to deliver a large advance order. Receipt books available on application.
September 13th is set as Pershing Day with events in all Union County school districts. Citizens are urged to attend local meetings and renew pledges for War Savings Stamps as the county works to meet its quota.
The Food Administration asks for the names and addresses of all Sunday School Superintendents in the United States. Please send the list by the next mail from your community.

In Sedan a wagon of watermelons drew a crowd and patriotic speeches. Scott priced melons at seventy cents but refused to donate proceeds to Red Cross, earning the label slacker. The crowd bought half at auction, proceeds to Red Cross, while Scott left with leftovers.
Frank Farqueson, president of the Rocky Mountain Trades Association, and thirty dealers from Raton Las Vegas Springer Santa Fe Trinidad Denver Pueblo Wisconsinburg Des Moines and Dalhart will dine with Clayton Garage Dealers Association led by president J Allen Wikof on Monday August 26. A picnic lunch is planned on Perico creek. Arthur Wiedman leaves the Eklund hotel after two years employment to visit California relatives before enlisting in the army.
In New Mexico Pershing Day on September 13 marked a major one day campaign to boost War Savings Stamps. Director Hallett Raynolds urged widespread participation by all adults and businesspersons to reach goals across Saraforca, Socorro, Luna, and Valencia counties, highlighting the need to fund lead and powder for the war and clarifying that participation is not limited to women and children.
Clayton schools will begin Monday September 6 with Superintendent J. E. Chamberlain urging all patrons to have children ready. Patrons who will teach or board are asked to notify Prof. J. E. Chamberlain, Le Ed, and Garson Rutledge. Rutledge and family left Tuesday for the hills of Toas New Mexico to spend several weeks in the cooler regions, fishing.
Pax Valverde Juan J Duran and A H Darden attended the Democratic Central Committee meeting Thursday at Santa Fe.
As we go to press we learn that Captain C W Presnall M ER C will arrive on the noon train after being gassed in France and sent home to recuperate His wife has served with the State Bank of Commerce during part of his absence Next week the News will publish Dr Presnall s experiences in France.
Albert Valdes of Moses New Mexico marketed the first 1918 Pintos in Clayton. W L Franklin of Four State Seed Co bought the crop while Valdes threshed over two thousand pounds but delivered 166 pounds to Clayton priced at 74 cents. That day Mrs Franklin shipped a carload of the 1917 Pintos.
