Pinto bean boom drives Union County farming profits

Union County farmers soar on Pinto beans with an expected season yield around four hundred pounds per acre and total production near twenty four million pounds. Last year over one million dollars was paid to growers, with sixty thousand acres harvested and strong demand from eastern, southern, and government buyers.

Sad Death of Patricia Hyde at Clapham

Patricia Martha Hyde, 22 months old, child of Mr and Mrs Goo Hyde, died at home near Clapham from whooping cough. An early call to a doctor arrived too late. The infant, known as Tie to friends, was beloved as a smiling baby learning to talk. Interment was in Clayton cemetery on Thursday. The News extends sympathy to grieving parents. Mr Rupert P Asplumb, secretary of the State Tax Commission, visited Grayton last week on business.

Union County Bean Growers Organize

A large crowd of Union County bean growers met at the Court House on July 23 and affiliated with the Bean Growers Association of the State. A local 26 member organization formed with a board of directors to safeguard farmers from profiteers and to improve market access for beans and other crops. The News pledges support and urges locating out of town buyers to raise prices for Union County products.

War Savings Stamps Effort Urged Across Union County

A New Mexico War Savings note reports Luna County has met quota while the state lags. Union County nears top, but state total remains only about one tenth of annual goal. Officials warn slackers and urge immediate subscriptions to support the war effort and defend local privileges.

Red Cross Ice Cream Social at Spencer Church

An ice cream social will be held at Spencer church eight miles east of Clayton on Friday night August 46. The event is hosted by the Union Ridge Red Cross branch. Everyone is invited to attend.

A depot gathering bid farewell to twenty five selective service men bound for Camp Cody in Deming New Mexico. Weichman Family Returns from Month in Hot Springs

Jack Weichman and his family have returned from Hot Springs Arkansas after a month away. The trip was made in Mr Weichman's Ford. Judge Leib of Raton stayed several days in Clayton this week. He looked well and supporters in Union County expect his Democratic renomination in the Eighth Judicial District this fall.

Clayton High School Bonds Over the Top

Election day in Clayton drew few voters with only 140 of about 7000 ballots cast. The school board sought 25000 to finish and equip a new West side ward school and the high school. Thirteen votes opposed while one hundred seven favored the bond, suggesting likely broad support among those staying away.

Garage Dealers of Clayton Revoke Holiday Closings

The Garage Dealers of Clayton revoked their prior order to close on all holidays and at six o clock in the evening on other days. Say they may re adopt the rule if it serves the country, praising their patriotic sacrifice to conserve gasoline and labor for the government.

Clayton Citizens Visit Springer in Return Trip

Pat Valverde, Register of the U S Land Office at Clayton, Simon Hersstein and son Herbert Herzstein, M G Johnson, Clayton merchants, and Attorney Hugh B Woodward left Clayton Tuesday for Albuquerque and other points in the state. They reached Springer last Saturday afternoon and stayed briefly before continuing home. Old time friends of Valverde welcomed the group and regretted not having more time to reminisce.

Letter From a Soldier Boy Red Hutchinson Farewell

Mr Hutchinson of Clayton received a letter from his son Red Hutchinson known as Red. Dated July 21 1918 the soldier writes to his father that he does not know his next address, bids good luck and God speed, promises to write when well, and says this is his farewell to his father and friends.
