G. G. Smith spoke to Old Settlers on Wednesday arguing state land laws waste resources. He urged repealing tax land laws and creating a permanent endowment funded by sale or lease proceeds to support rural schools, offering long term loans to farmers and stockmen while limiting land sales per individual.
Union County saw more than its share of rain deficiency in June as New Mexico overall posted one of the driest Junes on record. The state averaged 0.40 inch, 0.71 inch below normal, with eastern counties slightly wetter. Harvest proceeded with generally fair to good yields in border counties while stock and range suffered in dry farming districts.
Newport Rhode Island July 31 Marine Corps Sergeant Clarence Rhodes told visiting society women aboard the battleship Utah that white clothes look dazzling when soap does most of the work. He emphasized washing with proper soap use and minimal water to wet the wash.
At the Union County Old Settlers picnic speakers urged making pigs of Pig Club members non assessable to promote hog raising. Isaacs proposed a law to exempt ten pigs and their litters from taxation to boost the swine industry and called for a county oil test well with state aid to explore mineral wealth near Union County.

In Taos County a fisherman known as Doc Dunn allegedly used grasshoppers as bait after running short of flies. A game warden questioned his catch and the story alleges Dunn claimed to keep a four inch minnow hostage to avoid arrest. Dunn later vanished, ending the encounter.
A wartime rumor claims the twenty dollar gold piece brings bad luck as 13 appears repeatedly on its reverse design. The note urges disposing of the coin, noting thirteen stripes and stars, a thirteen-letter motto, and thirteen leaves and arrows.
H. Sammons and sister Mrs. J Hodges of Tennessee visiting in Colorado left Tuesday for Ludlow to visit their brother. They will travel in Sammons car.
Mes. Mary T. Wood superintendent of Union County Hospital left Tuesday for California to spend her vacation.
Engineer James A. French announced northern county road work will begin once sea forces are available to complete the Sa-Toons bridge project. In Luton County work will focus on the Colorado-to-Gulf Highway between Clayton and Raton, not the main road from Clayton to Narava Visa. Bridges across several streams and smaller crossings will be addressed.
A telephone message notes good fishing on the Red River and Cabpresta lakes. The report says striking beauties are rising, prompting Mr and Mrs Harry Hana and Mrs Suthers to extend their stay by a week.
Elmer Kelly of Bowie Texas returns home after accepting a position with George H Wade. Kelly formerly lived in the area and is welcomed by many friends to the community.
Smith to Denver: Halph Smith, formerly employed at Barnhart Jewelry, left Monday. Des Moines man, 46, is taking his place in the business.
Dr Chilton and Mrs Ed and Mr Sod Mrs CC Duan return Sunday from an extended camping and fishing trip through the western part of the state where they spent several weeks enjoying the outdoors.
