President Calls Out N M National Guard Mobilization Ordered

Santa Fe May 10. Columbus, Lama county, will be the mobilization point for the New Mexico national guard with troops moving as railroads assemble equipment. Two Las Cruces companies stay home. others reinforce due to Mesilla valley refugees. First regiment infantry battalions, battery and hospital corps head for Columbus likely crossing into Mexico. Recruits push toward full war strength of 1,000. guardsmen urged to enlist at armories. Red Cross to organize. mobilization affects high school and district court. Judge Mechem to preside as needed. Mrs Noble won a judgment in Justice Kingdom's court on Friday over her mother Mrs D L Spore who had two cows belonging to the plaintiff in her possession. The evidence shows Mrs Spore came into ownership of the cattle through unclear means.

Many Pretty Homes in the Mexhoma Neighborhood

A reporter describes the Mexhoma neighborhood as one of the prettiest farming areas with rapidly improving farms and mostly new bungalow style homes. Notable builders include Spencer, Bulls, Barnett, Smith and Arthur Wooten, with Wooten’s brown sandstone house featuring a stone pillared veranda and planned hot and cold running water.

Antelope Given By Violators In Estancia Valley

Five antelope out of six were slain by game butchers and law violators in Estancia valley last week. One buck escaped. The Santa Fe Game Protective Association reported to the state game warden. The crime shocks local sportsmen as antelope near extinction in New Mexico.

Otto Buys Akin Section Adds to Otto Ranch

Otto purchases 640 acres from Floyd Akin this week. The land adjoins the Otto ranch and becomes part of it. The reported price is 8.00 dollars per acre.

Roswell cadet ends fast track to guard service at home

Sammy Gray son of Mr and Mrs Tom Gray attends State Military Institute Roswell telegraphs father for permission to join the National Guard at the border. Tom replies Sammy should return home after term ends May 24 to help in the family lumber business. Sammy graduates in two years half the usual time.

Kenton Business Men Victims of Big Blaze

Fire in Kenton Oklahoma spread through the Slack Mercantile building destroying the Cimarron County Bank the Slack store and timber yard stock and a residence and public buildings. Guy W Slack the heaviest loser with losses estimated 3000 to 4000 dollars mostly uninsured. The bank plans to reopen in a new building and the town awaits rebuild decisions as sightseers visit the devastated area.

Bond Filed in High School Site Appeal

Attorney Hugh B. Woodward filed a $10,000 bond for clients Wednesday as part of an appeal from Judge Lieb's opinion to the supreme court. The case concerns locating Clayton's proposed $35,000 high school and notes Judge Lieb sustained the board’s action for a site in the east part of town costing $1800.

Racing Matinee Announced with Purse Details

A racing matinee is set for Friday and Saturday afternoons May 19 and 20 featuring races of one half mile for $50, one quarter mile for $40, and one eighth mile for $20, plus a non-winners purse. Two matched races are planned with five entries and three starters. managers invite all fast horses and the public to attend.

A contract was signed last week by A. Cooley of the Extension Department of the State Agricultural College and County Commissioner Salome Garcia with C. C. Dunn, secretary of the Clayton Business Men's Association, for engaging a county agricultural agent appointed by the State college. Appointment expected this week.

Union County Farming Page Reflects Local Ag Views

The paper carried farming propositions before Union county farmers and used its columns to let them air views. Tom Gray recalled seeing over 500 bushels of corn left on a bear farm due to lack of granary space, a sign of a developing farming region with many similar examples across the county.

Kilburn to Return Next Week After Wisconsin Trip

Kilburn returned from Wisconsin where he accompanied his son Frank to Mayo hospital for an appendectomy. Frank will be released Monday and is due in Clayton late next week. Couple Elopes in Darhart Wedding by J G Parsons

Bessie May Bywater and Howard Massey surprised friends by marrying in Darhart with Rev J G Parsons. Bywater a noted Clayton stenographer, Massey a well known Union County rancher. They plan to live on the room's ranch near Barney.

Rose and Barker were married Sunday afternoon by Rev. A P Gaines. Barker works as night man for the Pullman and his bride has been employed at the Eklund hotel. They are well regarded and receive many good wishes.

Town Officials See Important Job Ahead

Town council held a meeting Tuesday to discuss retiring and incoming officials. Mayor Hammond and Mayor Rixey outlined future aims for Clayton, with Aldermen presenting plans for municipal ownership and plant management as well as a survey for plant expansions. The board approved appointments and authorized a consulting engineer to survey needs and plan water and light plant extensions.
